Happy 1st birthday to tiny baby born at just 23 weeks

Sarah Slater, whose daughter was also born at 23 weeks says Lexie is “living proof” that the law needs updating.

"..She said: “We’re so glad to have Lexie home with us at last and it just shows how outmoded our laws on abortion are.

“Some mothers-to-be would be able to legally terminate their pregnancy at 23 weeks – yet my Lexie is living proof babies can survive being born so prematurely.

“I never realised a baby would be so well developed at 23 weeks and they do have a chance of life.”

In 2008 during the passage of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill MPs voted against lowering the UK’s upper limit for abortion, which stands at 24 weeks."

 The baby was born within abortion age and lived?

having an aboration at 24 weeks is disgusting tbh. The age should be well lowered

Indeed it is, some would say abortions at all is disgusting. all well and good I suppose, they are of course entitled to that opinion.

It should of course be noted that less than 2% of all abortions occur between 20 and 24 weeks and these are only carried where the woman's or foetus' health is at severe risk.

I suppose we could go down the route of the fundamentalist christians and erode the time limit and then when more infants survive at earlier gestational dates erode the time limits even further. or better yet in their eyes ban abortions.

Bring all the unwanted children into the world then set up homes/adoption agencies for them, increase the social services budget for it. Remove some other part of the NHS to fund looking after the health of the mother and child etc.

Wonder how pro life supporters feel when they hear of women who either die of pregnancy complications which could have been prevented by an abortion, or of mothers who leave new born infants at hospital entrances etc because they cant cope. Will of God I suppose eh?

I think an easier solution would be to somehow stop idiots and children having sex without contraception.

Yeah I suppose we could insist on all females coming into puberty being forcibly implanted with contraceptives.

Then after they reach maturity both mentally and physically, allow them to sit some sort of means testing and an examination of basic parenting skills before we stop the forcible implants.

I rejected a system that forcibly implanted males on the grounds it wouldnt stop older males impregnating gullible teenage females.

well, I personally feel abortion is wrong and I wouldn't do it myself. Having said that I'm not saying it's wrong all together just for me (if that makes sense?!) I don't usually like to get into arguments about it because it's something that I find hard to discuss, all I can be sure about is that it's not for me. I do how ever think at that late stage it's very wrong unless like you said it's for the womans or foetus sake, I'm not really up to scratch on the regulations of abortion.

The only other option is educating young people on the importance of contraceptives and safe sex and we all know how the Jesus lobby feel about that.

My Godchildren were born early and were just 1lb 9oz and 2lb 13oz in weight. I've seen how they survive first hand so would agree, the latest time people can abort needs to be much lower. Nothing wrong with those two - trust me!!

that does not work as they are too young and cannot foresee the outcome. you need to ban it and stop them doing it.

Thats pretty amazing. :)

I think the age should be lowered to 16-20 weeks. I would say 12 because you should know if you want a baby or not, but I guess to be safe just in case they dont realise theyre pregnant until so late.

A friend of a friend gave birth just 24 weeks into her pregnancy and she now has a beautiful healthy girl.. Not only does it make you think about the current abortion laws, but it also makes you realise how wonderful the people are that make this sort of miracle happen!

This. There needs to be plenty of condoms and "the pill" on offer. You can get them in clinics and that but I think they should be accessible from schools too.

Beastie 23-01-2011 10:27 PM

I think the abortion limit should be lowered to 16 weeks which is 4 months. Really it should be 12 weeks which is 3 months. However some people are not showing then and some claim they didn't know they was pregnant at that time. But anyway no one should have an abortion after 16 weeks at all!! (Unless you or your baby are at risk)
