What Is 'The Fray - How To Save A Life' About?

Amazing song.

The other day in school someone used it in a video presentation and there was a bit of a debate about whether they should get the mark for choosing a song that matched the subject of the video or not, which then lead to a row over what the song was about.

I always thought this song was about someone telling someone else someone has died?

Then someone else said it was about your friend no longer being your friend.

Another person said it was about death but didn't really go into how it was about death.

Then one girl said it's about having an affair.

There were a few more ideas people kept throwing about.

I still think I'm right but I don't know, does anyone on here know what this song is actually about?

I think it's about a guy splitting up with his girlfriend, or the girl splitting up with him, not completely sure though

I heard it was about a guy who stayed up all night trying to talk a man out of suicide, but in the end he killed himself anyway

I think it's general radio friendly fanwankerry designed to be open to any soppy situation the budding fangirl has going on in her life.

Oh that makes sense, I just looked up the lyrics and I always though this line - "And pray to God, he hears you" was "And babe, I gotta kiss you" which is why I always thought it was about a couple breaking up

I always thought it was related to suicide

It's as bad as that "Hey Delilah" song. Droney, soppy and lazy strumming

Wikipedia is your friend.

According to lead singer, pianist and songwriter Isaac Slade, the song was composed and influenced by his experience while working as a mentor at a camp for troubled teens:
“ One of the youngsters I was paired up with was a musician. Here I was, a protected suburbanite, and he was just 17 and had all these problems. And no one could write a manual on how to save him. ”

Slade claims that the song is about all of the people that tried to reach out to the boy but were unsuccessful. As Slade says in an interview, the boy's friends and family approached him by saying, "Quit taking drugs or I won't talk to you again," but all he needed was some support. The verses of the song describe an attempt by an adult to confront a troubled teen. In the chorus, the singer laments that he himself was unable to save a friend because he did not know how.

While this was the original intent of the song, the band has opened the song to interpretation. They created a website where fans were welcome to submit music videos they had made for the song. This arose from the response that Slade got from the song:[2]

The lead singer, Isaac, was mentoring a 17yr old who was already addicted to drugs and alcohol. He said that the people in this kids life were trying to get him out of the "stage" but they were coming at him like, "Stop this or we're going to stop talking to you". It's about being in a situation where you don't really know what to do unless someone comes and helps you in a positive light and that's what Isaac did for him.

Its about how the producers of BB saved the lives of the BB8 housemates.
