The band, who had been strongly rumoured to play at the festival, will top the bill on the Pyramid Stage for the third time in their career, reports The Sun.

However, The Rolling Stones appear to have turned out the chance to headline the festival, despite being given a "massive offer" to play, according to the newspaper.

Last year, organiser Michael Eavis hinted about the identity the Sunday night headliner, stating it is "an American artist that I've been wanting for yonks and yonks".

He also told BBC News he has asked U2 to headline the festival on the Friday (June 24), but has yet to receive a response from the Irish band.

The four-piece were forced to pull out of headlining last year's festival after singer Bono injured his back.

Glastonbury 2011 takes place at Worthy Farm, Pilton. Billed music takes place on June 24-26, with the site opening on June 22.

The 'american artist that I've been wanted for yonks' I believe might be Prince...there're a lot of rumours about him. That would be epic.

OH FFS! U2 headlining was the only thing that made me feel better about missing out on tickets. :mad:

Fuck right off. Coldplay are absoloute pants. Glasto is truley now just another music festival.

What a depressing headliner. Coldplay are godawful and watching them at a festival would put me into a coma.

Crap.. you thought they'd get someone a bit more exciting to get the crowd going.

I am gutted I didn't manage to get tickets. Coldplay are one of the few bands who only play "depressing songs" which I like!

There will be plenty of space in front of the headline stage when a few thousand disgruntled hippies and drunk students lumber to the nearest dance tent as soon as Radio Radiohead hit the stage.

Oxegens lineup last year was!! You can't beat glastos atmosphere though. Way more to do & see at glasto aswell.
