Is that not a previously banned film with a really harrowing rape scene?

I think you're right about the original from the 1970s. It must still have been officially banned in the UK by the early 80s when Betamax/VHS became affordable......it got a reputation as one of the first 'video nasties' as it quickly became an 'under the counter' tape available from video rental places. There was also outrage that teens could be watching such stuff at home while the parents were out.

This is the remake.

Funny how times have changed with the advent of the internet. It's now acknowleged that 13 and 14 year olds are routinely downloading X-rated and porn films where parents haven't put in the correct restrictions

We watched parts of the original in Media as we were looking into the whole Mary Whitehouse Saga and censorship in general. I wasn't particularly fond of what I saw. It was just trying to be shocking for the sake of it, no reason or rhyme to it. I imagine the remake to be a worse version of it.

Exactly - no real drama to the original - just a see what they could get away with - and UK Censors banned it even before Mary started the outrage. Still became the no.1 'under the counter'.

In some ways, it tells what the poeple wanted in these days. Watch awful?

I alluded to internet and the people (us) watch worse on the net in 2011. Where do limits go?

Well I liked the remake, I agree the deaths where funny.

Might well be OK - I'd imagined they were making a pastiche of the original. I seldom like remakes so wasn't gonna watch it. But that's now 2 good reviews from people who have actually seen it.

Its quite different from the orginal, like parts happen in the film that happened in the orignal, so you think whats going to happen will happen because of the orignal. But they made ways of twisting it. The deaths where more over the top than the orignal, and I perfered them than the orignal.

For me the rape scene was more horrorfing this time.

I've only heard of this film because of the reference in Scream; "I Spit on Your Garage".

A few years ago I found a vhs copy of the original in a charity shop for just 30p. Had to borrow a vcr to watch it. I'd heard about it having been banned years ago. I then sold it for £3.

I may give the new one a look
