U.S. seeks immediate steps on Libya crisis

Oh well here we go again.

President Barack Obama consulted the leaders of Britain, France and Italy on Thursday on immediate steps to end the Libyan crisis, as Washington kept all options open, including sanctions and military action, to stem the bloodshed.

The United States is working to build international consensus for action against Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's government, which Obama has condemned for "outrageous" violence against its people.

"I'm not ruling out bilateral options," White House spokesman Jay Carney said when asked whether the United States was considering military steps. "I'm not ruling anything out.

He said the situation in the North African oil-producing nation "demands quick action."

Obama's talks with Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi -- one of the few world leaders to have had recent direct contact with Gaddafi -- were focussed on next steps, the White House said in a statement.

"The president expressed his deep concern with the Libyan government's use of violence which violates international norms and every standard of human decency, and discussed appropriate and effective ways for the international community to immediately respond," the statement said.

U.S. officials said specific steps could include seeking stronger U.N. Security Council action, including possible sanctions, support for calls to suspend Libya from the U.N. Human Rights Council, and creating and enforcing a no-fly zone to prevent further government attacks.

Other measures under consideration including suspending Libya's export licenses, freezing the assets of certain Libyan individuals including members of the Gaddafi family, sending humanitarian relief and increasing the ability to broadcast into Libya, the officials said.

So is this a case of Uncle Sam using its power and influence for the benefit of others or simply trying to get its claws into another oil rich nation?

(Each new episode in the Libyan crisis sends the price of oil rocketing up or spiralling down, must be playing hell with the yanks)

It's a tricky situation, as at the risk of doing something some may call morally correct they are undermining a nations sovereignty. I don't think military action is the right thing to do, although I suppose that doesn't mean it is a bad thing to do.

I like the way they are ready to leap into Libya (bad relations with US) but not too keen to use their might and influence with Egypt or Bahrain (good relations with US).

It's not just Libya we need to invade. In Iraq dozens of protestors were killed by their corrupt government. We need to invade Iraq and give them demo... oh wait... we're already there... and that's our government we installed... awkward

I honestly don't think the US has the troops to occupy a 3rd Middle Eastern country.

The US need to wind their neck in a bit if they keep sticking it out like that somebody will have a chop at it.

I do think something needs to be done about Gadaffi but a war isn't the way to go, I really doubt the US' and our motives if we do go to war since as others have said it's an oil heavy country.

I'd say do the right thing and go with the sanctions to force him out.

Freezing his accounts and his families will do it, instead of charging in we should steam him out. Get rid of his assets and he'll soon have to give in with as the whole country is pretty much rebelling against him.

Obviously it's a tricky situation. People have short memories. This is not the first time arab countries have done a major overhaul. Let us not forget that most of these current dictators got into power via the same kind of protestors and uprisings.

So will the next gen middle east be any better? History tells us no. But we can all hope.

The US and most of the west are taking a very measured approach to this because we've seen it all before.
