Is the Lord of the Rings overrated?

Is the Lord of the Rings (both movies and books) overrated? I've watched the movies more than once and it just seems like they took a movie that could have lasted 1 hour and found a way to expand it to 10 hours. And I've read the books and the language while descriptive seems to drag on.

Not saying they're bad just maybe not as good as people make them out to be. What do you think?

never found it interesting, so I can't comment.

Not for me, three of my favourite ever films and books, but I'm a huge LOTR fan anyway.

I find it incredibly, incredibly boring. As books I'm not a fan of Tolkien's drawn out style of prose. As a movie it runs for nine or so hours without much in the way of major twists.

Just bored the arse off me, TBH.

I hate Peter Jackson too. I just can't explain it. I hate him.

not at all, i enjoyed it very much

I adore the films, and when I think about the books, I don't remember them being boring, but I'm sure they were a tad.

And The Hobbit is a great read, I hope the upcoming film is good.

ive never read the books, but the films are not overated imo.

Zippy 23-03-2011 10:49 PM

The films are long winded with some terrible dialogue and the characters are simplistic.

That said, the scale of the films and the production values are amazing. A real cinematic event in movie history and you can certainly see where the money went. And Peter jackson deserves credit for tackling such a mammoth project.

probably overrated in some respects. I can't even remember a lot in the films tbh besides the big battles.

I think it's better than Star Wars. I never got into Star Wars... or Star Trek for that matter!
