Who is the best Beatle?

The four suspects are :

1 - Paul McCartney

The one who wrote most of the best songs of the 20th Century with John Lennon. Still a bit of a prick. Still great live. Don't eat meat etc. Arguably the 'main one' and creative consistency of the group.

2 - John Lennon

The one who wrote most of the best songs of the 20th Century with Paul McCartney. Liked to smack his bitch up when he was a nasty alcoholic so he was a massive prick sometimes. Shot by Mark Chapman - Catcher In The Rye salesman. Arguably had the strongest solo stuff. Yoko still loves him long time.

3 - George Harrison

The cool one. Flirted around the cosmos in his peace bubble completely at ease with the creative turmoil that went on around him. Kept true to the Hare Krishna stuff until his death. Wrote Here Comes The Sun and a bunch of other great ones, including a pretty decent solo career. The unsung hero of the group.

4- Ringo Starr

Look everyone, Ringo wrote a song ... let's stick it on the fridge!

Voiced Thomas the Tank Engine. Now entering regional George Michaels lookalike competitions.

Discuss.

John Lennon as he never really suffered from the same near-instant musical decline that the other Beatles did when they went solo although don't get me wrong Harrison's dignity was intact.

Think what you like, I hate Wings and every solo effort McCartney ever shat out.

I think Lennon's become the fashionable answer for the uneducated or uninitiated in a lot of cases. Honestly I can't decide between Paul and John. They both kept each other in check. Paul was by far the superior musician in terms of worksmanship and composition but arguably John wrote with more soul and clearly valued lyrics over melody. One would not have been the same without the other.

It would be absurd to pick one of the others if you were basing it soley on Beatles contribution but as a whole I'm really warming to George Harrison. He is a much easier man to love and comes with a lot less baggage.

I also think John really came into his own with the solo stuff, whereas Paul's gold was clearly in The Beatles discography.

McCartney was a good melodist and a consummate professional in his post-Beatles career, I'll give you that, but then the same can be said of Abba, a latter-day Fleetwood Mac and the Backstreet Boys' team of songwriters. A good hook and a hummable tune is not enough sometimes. The difference is Paul was capable of so much more.

I usually pick George and I'm not sure why. I think it's just on the merit of Something, Here Comes the Sun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

I think in order of greatness it goes
John > Paul > George > Ringo

But personal preference:
George > John > Paul > Ringo

Sorry Ringo :(

poor Ringo :( his work in Thomas the Tank Engine was outstanding tbf but probably John Lennon

Pretty much this for me too. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is one of my favourite songs of all time.

it's always been Ringo since I was a kid aha.

joeysteele 19-04-2011 08:41 AM

I spent some time yesterday listening to their solo work on CD,mainly just the singles but I ahve to say I was surprised at 2 of the Drummer Ringo's solo efforts, 'It Don't Come Easy' and 'Photograph' I would put up there with many of the others solo efforts.

MTVN 19-04-2011 09:05 AM

Paul McCartney > John Lennon > George Harrison > Ringo Starr

I'm not big into the beatles but I like most of Paul and John's solo stuff, dont know all that much about George and as for Ringo, well noone likes him
