Has anyone successfully quit smoking?

Just wondering if anyone has managed it as I'm planning to give up for good.

Niall 20-04-2011 06:40 PM

My Nan did. She said one day she decided she wouldn't smoke anymore and she supplemented cigarettes with Polos. Eventually she like got sick of eating polos and gave them up too. She hasn't had a cigarette since the 80s I think now. :o

I smoked briefly as a teen and had the odd one in my early twenties but I never took to it. I think I was lucky

I quit around Christmas time from about 12 a day for three or four years. Didn't supplement it with anything. Just decided I didn't want to smoke anymore so I ... didn't. I quit drinking as well which made it easier. I basically do nothing now. I've had my fun.

Contrary to popular belief it doesn't take a lot of willpower. It only takes a tiny amount of willpower that you have to hold on to. As soon as you let go of that small bit and realize your not fully over smoking your screwed.

I just genuinly didn't want to smoke anymore. Plus I made myself super neurotic by imagining my heart bursting and stuff so it's impossible for me to smoke now anyway or I'll get all those thoughts again.

Scare the shit out of yourself.

yes /cher

i stopped on my 18th birthday (the exact day) because i knew once i was old enough to buy themself i would be buying them more and smoking more because before then my mum used to buy them and i was only allowed 10 a day

In before the inevitable unhelpful Arista post.

Not so far but I want to be off them in the next few months. I've tried before and the longest I lasted was around 5 weeks. My problem was it never seemed to get any easier. I've started running 3 times a week now and since I have, I've found that I've halved the amount of cigarettes I smoke in a day (from about 15-20 to 7-8). I think if I stick to the running, that will be my way of quitting the ciggies for good.

Ramsay 20-04-2011 07:13 PM

ive tried alot
mostly just went cold turkey...didnt work
now im trying to cut down..went from like maybe 10ish a day to about 2 so im doing good..i hope

People with no will power not only can't give up smoking, they give in to peer pressure and take up that disgusting habit. I don't want lung damage so I will never smoke. I knew this since age 10 when everyone I knew started but I refuse to.

I still eat fast food like a sick dog and I sit in bed with a hunched back for about six hours at a time playing video games in the dark pausing only for cracking open easter eggs with my bare hands and having the odd bit of masturbation. I wouldn't ever judge anyone by their lifestyle. Some see the day to day attraction of smoking which can provide mini hits of pleasure for years and years worth the relatively little in comparison years you are taking off your life as a result of it and I'm totally fine with that.

It's really such a boring thing to get up yourself about.

This 100x over.

I hate it when people make snap judgements on your lifestyle and hold themselves in a higher regard because they perceive themselves as having a 'healthier' lifestyle.

Surely the healthiest lifestyle is one where the individual is happy, be it smoking and drinking for 60 years or watching what they eat and exercising daily for 90 years?

Yep. Gave them up aged 30 after smoking since I was about 15. Was smoking 20 to 30 a day when I quit. It was easy - I was pregnant. Always had that deal with myself, get pregnant - quit. And I did. I did use nicorrette inhalers and at least they gave me something to do with my hands  Don't know if the pregnancy strategy is going to work for the OP though..........:conf:
