Big Brother's Life Expectancy on Channel 5.

So we know there will be a Big Brother 12 [no sh*t] and we certainly know now there will be a Big Brother 13.

The contract expires after next year, right?
So as it stands - Big Brother 13 is the final series, at this moment - unless they do two series in one year and skip the stupid celebrity series, then BB14 is the final series.

Anyway, lets recap;
Spoiler:

Channel 4 signed a contract for Big Brother obviously in 2000 for if IRC 5 Years.

[I'm a little shaky on that so don't get pissed if that's incorrect].

The contract was extended from 2004 to 2006.

BB7 was brilliant; so they got really cock sure and decided to splash out and take Big Brother on for another 5 years.
LOL I bet they regretted that straight after Jade Goody returned.

I think Endemol are only interested in signing 2 Year or 5 Year Contracts with broadcasters as we have seen in the past now.

So what do you honesty think the life expectancy for Big Brother is now on Channel 5?
I realize it's too early to say, obviously - but I want to know this for 2 reasons:

1) I just want to hear what you lot think.

2) I want to audition for the show, and I had planned to audition for BB15 but now I've just realized I won't be 18 until the end of Summer 2014, so I'll actually not be able to be a housemate until BB16. :(
The age should be lowered to 16 - Just saying.

Yeah so what do we think?

Channel 5 - is a laughing stock we all know that, BB is their biggest show.
If BB12 can maintain the usual 3 Million then surely in their eyes that would be BIG ratings and enough to put more effort and attention into the show, rather than other C5 shows that 9 people watch. :bored:

I can see it getting axed after BB12 if it doesn't perform well enough in the ratings, regardless of the contract.

If it performs well I could see it lasting an extra 3 years max

Surely it wouldn't take much to please Channel 5 though?

Maia 04-05-2011 06:27 PM

It's confirmed until 2013 I think, Big Brother 14.

I think if C5 play their cards right and it gets them high ratings, then I can see them wanting to keep it for longer, so the contract would be renewed again for 2014 and beyond. Here's hoping anyway.

Callum 04-05-2011 06:27 PM

Axed after BB13, I just can't see people watching Channel 5. Maybe I'm wrong but I kinda feel like they said goodbye to BB last year and they're going to have to do an extensive promo campaign to let people know it's back and on a new channel.

Tom4784 04-05-2011 06:28 PM

We'll get BB13, If I recall they've optioned for four series of it off the bat so they'll see that through. I think they could only cancel it if they agreed to one series with the prospect of more if it's successful and this deal sounds like C5 have commited to BB until 2012.

I don't expect anything beyond that.

Ratings wise probably not, but I can just see them taking tonnes of flack for it and just being like "oh well sack it off it's not worth all the hassle"

UM, because they signed a couple of contracts for 2 and 5 years with channel 4? lol

Yes.

Are you trying to come across like you know any differently?
In the past they've either signed 2 Year or 5 Year Contracts, never anything over or inbetween.

Omah 04-05-2011 06:34 PM

Axed after Big Brother 13 - not enough viewers switching to C5

DigitalSid 04-05-2011 06:42 PM

Axed after BB13, I hope it isn't, but it's the most likely scenario at present (because of viewer fickleness, Desmond's heavy handed handling of flops on the channel thus far and the fact that changes to the show if BB12's revamp fails won't realistically be able to be implemented till series 13 with the first 3 series pretty much back to back, by which time C5 will have made their decision on whether to renew).

(Btw they can't skip CBB or do two summer series, the deal is specifically for two main series and 2 celeb series, that's what's been paid for and agreed to)

But you presumed endemol's contracts with "any broadcaster" based on two contracts signed with channel 4. Despite the fact endemol have all sorts of shows on the majority of channels.

Actually BB's last contract was for 3 years :p (BBCH in 2008 till BB11 in 2010) ;)

joeysteele 04-05-2011 07:33 PM

I think there will be another minimal 3 year contract after 2013 and most likely that will be for 5 years rather than just 3.
I think the advertising revenue, the viewer involvement and the ratings increase for Channel 5 will ensure that happens.

I actually though voted that BB could get to its 20th series,I believe it still to be a great idea, it has,if its handled right and planned better than the last 3 series on Channel 4,the potential to be taken to its 20th series.
It has run for 11 years now and is still in the main largely successful,it will seem even more so on Channel 5.

ILoveTRW 04-05-2011 07:47 PM

Considering the show is already dead before it has even started, I'd say after BB13.
Hopefully the can pull something out of the bag, but I doubt.

The thing is the series' are too close together cbb8,bb12,cbb9 all in 6 months,Its way to much for most people

MTVN 04-05-2011 08:07 PM

They'll have a couple of series, it will get about a million or so viewers a night and then will meet an anti-climatic end. That's what I think anyway, I struggle to see how it could ever be a big success

I know, I just mean like if CBB9 were to be the final CBB and if they actually did re-new the contract - then maybe CBB wouldn't return and they'd fill 2013 with two Big Brother series, like one in the Summer months and one in Winter, just to milk it.

BringItOn 04-05-2011 08:45 PM

I doubt it will be a rating hit and will only live for a little bit longer sadly :(
Channel 5 rarely have over a million views though so it might do some good as I believe it will probably just peak over the million mark but nothing more. Hope I'm wrong though :P

Patrick 04-05-2011 09:08 PM

Tbf, it doesn't really matter as much as people think about the broadcaster's previous ratings or ratings with other shows.

Big Brother has a huge fan base who will stick by it, and go to Channel 5 - we aren't going to pick up millions of new fans along the way though, anyone who thinks that is deluded.

I have a feeling [or maybe just a wish] that we're all going to be proven wrong and this turns out to be an amazing win for Channel 5 and Endemol to hit that spark that we had in the golden years, but IDK.

Kerry 04-05-2011 09:17 PM

I'd give it a couple of years. Would love to see it succeed though

Mac Hiavellian 04-05-2011 09:27 PM

I'm thinking/hoping it'll be renewed for at least 2 more years. I fear it could be a bit of an overkill with CBB8-BB12-CBB9 in such a short space of time unless they're all fantastic. Even so it should still get 2-3 million like it did on Channel 4 imo.

Judas 04-05-2011 09:38 PM

I couldn't think of anything worse than watching 16 and 17 year olds running around on Big Brither.

Now stop being silly.

\PJ/ 04-05-2011 10:18 PM

The entire thing is making me cringe and I really think it's going to really fail badly, I hoped to be proved wrong.
