The Corrie Years - Axed 1963 suicide scene to be shown in new show

A SCENE in Coronation Street that was axed for being too controversial in 1963 is finally to be shown.

The Corrie Years, which looks back at the most explosive plots in the soap’s 50-year history, will include factory worker Sheila Birtles attempting suicide after she is dumped by her lover.

Soap bosses filmed actress Eileen Mayers swallowing a bottle of pills before vomiting in a bin. Neighbours were to have rescued her in what would have been one of the most shocking scenes to be seen on TV in the 60s.

But broadcasters got cold feet when the story line was leaked, leading to a mailbag of complaints from viewers – although Mayers was said to be disappointed.

A TV source said: “At the time it was deemed too controversial. But compared to what goes on in soaps these days, I don’t think the scene will very shocking.”

The Corrie Years will be broadcast later this year.

People always forget how gritty the show was back in the day, they always assume it was like the 90's (aka the 'Last of the Weatherfield Wine' era)

My heart almost stopped when I seen the words 'Corrie' and 'Axed' in the same title.

It'd die down in a few weeks. LOL

Then I imagine in about 10 Years there'd be a random 'BRING BACK CORRIE!' campaign or something.

LOL It is crazy to think though that eventually Corrie and EastEnders will both come to an end at some stage.

I'd think more really. Especially how the years fly by!

'Conor 24-06-2011 12:58 AM

how long do you reckon Ken will be in it for? I honestly reckon he could be gone in the next 5/6 years

Smithy 24-06-2011 12:59 AM

well he's like 80 something in rl, so he might only have a couple of years left in him

I know Hollyoaks will finish first, then Emmerdale but I would love to know which is going to last longest out of CS and EE?

This. :(

Good point about the years flying by, since 2010 everything is going so fast for everyone.

Weird thinking we will all be dead in a matter of years, which will seem like months - so we will all be dead in abit.

EE will last longer than Corrie, Corries been going on since 1960, EE only since 1985 or something..
