Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy has confirmed that stars Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer will not appear in the show's fourth season.

Murphy confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the trio's alter egos Rachel Berry, Finn Hudson and Kurt Hummel will graduate at the end of season three.

Murphy explained: "You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticise you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year."

He added that "more characters are leaving when staying" when the season ends.

Murphy also confirmed that Colfer and Michele had been involved in the plans, adding: "We made that decision and I involved Chris and Lea and they thought that was a good idea.

"They both trust the writing and trust me and felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top."

He also added that while he had not yet discussed his plans with Monteith, the actor "knows [Finn] was a sophomore when the show started".

It was recently reported that Chord Overstreet, who plays Sam Evans, may leave Glee after executives decided not to give his character series regular status.

However, an insider said that Overstreet is "welcome" back to the show when filming starts again next month.

Glee will return to US screens on Tuesday, September 20 at 8/7c on Fox. A UK premiere date for season three is to be confirmed.

From what Ive heard/seen the show surrounds them..

I haven't seen it since the first series but know many watch it so thought I'd post this

Good news - shows don't succeed with new casts. :idc: remember Skins? -is aware it's still going but failing badly LOL-

I don't watch Glee but I imagine Ryan Murphy will still get bored of this show despite having the opportunity to make it fresh.

He was going to leave after the 4th season of Nip/Tuck and ended it with the 2 main characters moving to LA but then he signed another contract to stay with the show, ******ed it up royally with the move to LA and the crazy stories and then set his sights on his unsuccessful pilot 'Pretty Handsome', his movies and then, of course, Glee. Nip/Tuck ended with 3 mini seasons rather than full ones and it was clear his attentions were elsewhere.

Also atm he's already working on another TV show 'American Horror Story' which will apparently have a different cast each season so my guess is if that takes off he'll ditch Glee for that

Anything could happen between now an season 4. It's my guess that this news is really all about testing the water. If he gets a bad reception over it, he can keep them in, if no one really cares he can let them go.

They should have ended it this season,they should have made New Directions win and Will should have went to Broadway.

arn't they like the 3 main characters..

I think as long as there's singing it'll be alright. I don't care about the storylines I only like seeing the songs. But I couldn't care less I'm ashamed that I watch it anyway LOL

No its meant to be Will,Rachel and Finn,but the writers loving of Kurt means his role has been upped which ruined season 2.

you horrible person, thats the worst part.

even though im a fan, i must admit that the songs are the worst part (apart from kurt anyway)

oh yeah, i saw the advert for the live movie when I saw harry potter and I cringed so much :bawling:

its obvious from the season 2 finale that Rachel and Kurt are going to have a spin off where they try and make it in New York

The only interesting thing about Glee was their cover of Don't Stop Believin' which got boring the 3rd time I heard it.

As Locke said, time to axe it.

And this will be where glee starts to go down hill when these leave the show. Makes it even more funny that sky have out bid channel 4 now. Without the main people I don't think it will get past season 5 and thats if there lucky.
