The Hunger Games

I'm obsessed with this series, I got the last two books yesterday and I read Catching Fire in two sittings. I'll start and finish the last book tomorrow I think.

For people who have never read or heard of it before it's set in the future in a country called Panem which is essentially a future America. Panem's run by the Capitol which is this luxurious city that lords it over the twelve districts which is where the lower class citizens live and work. After a failed rebellion the Capital creates the Hunger Games as which involves taking two kids from each district and pitting them against each other in a battle to the death in an ever changing booby trapped arena. The main character is a girl called Katniss Everdeen who volunteers for the games in place of her younger sister who was originally picked. It's quite similar to Battle Royale but with a very interesting Reality TV twist.

I can't recommend it enough, I think it's a brilliant series.

Yeah it's being released next year, I'm cautiously optimistic about it.

Callum 10-08-2011 06:47 AM

Need to read these books, heard nothing but good stuff about them.

Tom4784 10-08-2011 11:52 AM

I can't wait for the film adaptation now although I do fear it being a bit ****.

Niamh. 27-08-2011 06:31 PM

Read the 3 of them in 5 days, fantastic.

nicole_burks 28-08-2011 02:52 AM

I got the first one for Christmas.. I didn't read though.
But I've heard great things about it!

I'm mid almost 400 pages into Catching Fire, they keep killing my faves :bored:

Shaun 23-12-2011 06:07 PM

Tsk! I bought the first one for 7.99  a few weeks ago!

Haven't started it yet though.

Shaun 23-12-2011 06:27 PM

They're in "The Works" if you have one of those stores nearby

Tom4784 23-12-2011 07:09 PM

I reckon you'll like them Shaun, the writing style is a bit peculiar at first but they're a pretty good set of books once you get past that.

Smithy 23-12-2011 08:49 PM

I finished catching fire :amazed:

I think I preferred The Hunger Games coz I found this one, slightly predictable (At the beginning it was anyway)

Gonna start Mockingjay tomorrow :D

Tom4784 24-12-2011 01:00 AM

Mockingjay is good, probably the worst one of the lot though.

Smithy 30-12-2011 10:33 PM

Imo

The Hunger Games > Mockingjay > Catching Fire

The ending of mockingjay seemed really, idk, flat? It all ended within the space of about 3 pages I was expecting more

Spoiler:

I think it had no other choice but to end flatly to keep it true to itself. An up lifting ending would have ruined the whole point of the story imo

Tom4784 31-12-2011 01:28 PM

Mockingjay has it's moments but i think it's the worst one in the series, It's still good don't get me wrong but I think parts of it were very lazily written.

Spoiler:

Like how every few chapters Katniss would black out or suffer an injury so that the author could explain away large chunks of the story. Plus the whole Peeta issue never really went anywhere, one chapter he wanted to kill her and in the next he was back in love with her again. It felt like an unneccesary obstacle just to spice things up really.

Smithy 31-12-2011 01:51 PM

Yeah, I kinda agree with the latter point, it did seem kinda pointless

omg and when
Spoiler:

Prim died, she may as well have not volunteered for the games :joker:

Niamh. 31-12-2011 07:18 PM

Yeah, I agree with both of those points

Spoiler:

That Peeta bit was a bit strange and not properly explained at all. And Prim dying was so sudden and quick :/

Niall 31-12-2011 09:55 PM

I really want to read this omg gekerjgkjsdnsdngljn
