The student chat thread [A Level Results Thursday!]

There is no place where you can really talk about careers, qualifications, exams and university etc. I know a lot of people have quite a good idea in their mind of what they want to do with their life.

I'm hoping to finish my a levels in: English, Media, Pshycology and Communication+Culture and then hopefully go off to Bournemouth university to do a degree in marketing. Would also like to try journalism too but not too sure that it's where my skills lie. Event management looks cool too but I think marketing seems perfect in terms of my a levels as they are all suited to that area of profession.

hmm, your school counselor would be a good start. That's what they're there for right?

Do they not have student counselors assigned to you in British schools?

Lewis. 18-07-2011 12:30 AM

I meant there's no designated area on the forum to talk about it

ohh oops, thought you meant in general. You're right though, considering the age of a lot of people on this forum, there really should be an area for students to discuss things like this on the forum.

I support it.

Jords 18-07-2011 12:42 AM

Right now Im thinking:

Teaching
- Primary (specialising in science)
- Secondary (psychology)

Social Worker
- Counsellor (getting people back on track)

Depends on my grades if I can do a psychology degree or not. If not it will be biology/environmental science/education studies with geography, so for secondary school teaching Id do biology/geography but I dont know any other jobs really linked to the others Id be interested in.

Really good idea!

I'm just curious but what draws you to marketing? It's my idea of hell and I can't see why anyone would willingly choose it as a career path with good reason.

I'm really raping on the Hicks videos today.

nicole_burks 18-07-2011 02:47 AM

I'm planning on studying math.
but I have no clue on what i'm going to do with it, people keep telling me to teach.
My mom is a teacher, and I just can't stand being in a class room :nono:
But, as of right now, my major is math.
:)

I agree Lewis - but I'll put the same post on here as I put on another very similar thread today:

I tried putting up a thread on the same subject months ago....

http://thisisbigbrother.com/forums/s...d.php?t=171063

you can see how many were interested in it.......

seems not many tibbers seem to give much thought to the real world out there and what may or may not have in store for them in the future.

Like yourself: given many are at stages where study choices are being made, moving on to college, uni etc: I'd have thought it would have generated interest too!

Just got my degree in International Shipping, Port Logistics and International Business Relationships with the highest mark of the 2008-2011 class. I'm damn proud of myself.

And I'm currently working in the second largest biggest shipping company of containers in the world as a sales assistant. It's awesome!

But I'm planning to win the lottery and to get the ***** out of here with my girlfriend.

Well done to you on your Degree - you should be damn proud of yourself !! :)

I had a brief involvment with Sealand Shipping abroad many moons ago (now Maersk Sealand I think?) p/t home secretary - errr.... illegal sort in Saudi - and despite what some might think, what goes on can be very interesting.

Good thing with your company is that it's a global leader - I take it there are options to transfer abroad if vacancies arise? If so -what an opportunity for the future if that's where you see it. (apart from that planned lottery win of course!)

Well, I'm very much a people person and I'm quite good at realising what makes people tick and how that can be used to promote a certain product to certain people. There are a lot of jobs in business that seem quite boring and are predominantly based around figures and facts, but the whole marketing and branding thing requires a much more creative mind and someone who is aware of the psychological aspects of advertising and also how the media can be used for that - all of those I am very interested in.

That's amazing! Well done! Was it always what you wanted to do?

Will change the name of the thread seeing as the idea for a separate sub-forum seems to have been turned down.

Lewis. 18-07-2011 07:39 PM

What day is the GCSE results day this year?

Yeah Maersk is ranked first and the company I am currently working in is 2nd

As soon as there is an opportunity outside of the country, I'll take it. My dream shot is either the port of Felixstowe or Dubai. Couldn't be any different places lol

Just a thing for Uni students: enjoy your Uni years while you're in it because it's unbelievably incredible. I really do not regret anything I've done these paste 3 years.

Yes it actually was. I've always loved boats, sea and economics so it's all a perfect match and determined why I have so hard to get there.
I think that, when you find your passion, working is much easier, even revising (such a pain in the ass lol), because you enjoy what you're doing.
Managers in a company see who's passionate and who is not and it's always in your advantage to show them that what you are doing means everything to you.

Would you say it's even worth going to uni anymore. It's going to be so expensive from next year to even think about living prices, let alone the extortionate prices they are introducing to actually do the courses. I know a lot of people are simply going straight onto apprenticeships and work, building their way up and making money at the same time. With your experience, do you think it pays itself off for everyone, or just a lucky few that manage to find the right oppurtunities?

CharlieO 18-07-2011 08:02 PM

August 25th :/

Will need to book it off of work. Am looking forward to it as I know I've worked as hard as I can... got my Math and English GCSE's last year as I was in an accelerated group, so that's a big bonus as it takes away so much pressure seeing as they're the main subjects.

First of all I think the student loans in the UK are atrocious. This is why I have never studied there, even I wanted to.
I think you need a minimum of education, you have got to know your basis BUT managers tend to focus on what you're abilities rather than a diploma on your CV.

Still, opportunities can take a long time to come, this is why you need to push the luck and find them.

Not long until results day for GCSE now  24 days and that's it... the last 11 years summed up on one bit of paper.
