Should the turner diaries be banned?

Norse mass killer, Anders Breivik, read and was profoundly influenced by the notorious Turner Diaries. Should this racist, anti-Jewish, anti-black book be banned?

Just been reading about it, hadn't heard about it before, sounds pretty ******ed up but I don't think it should actually be banned

joeysteele 26-07-2011 10:04 AM

I'm not really in favour of things being banned.

what about guns

he seemed to have got a few under false pretences

No

people can access anything these days on the internet so banning things is pointless. Just creates curiosity and promotes it more.

I dont know whats in the book but Im sure there's tons of similar material elsewhere.

Livia 26-07-2011 04:07 PM

I am not in favour of banning books. Banning stuff just makes them seem more attractive.

patsylimerick 26-07-2011 07:37 PM

Agree completely with Livia. You let these fools make their arguments and then you rubbish them. We can't ban ideas; but we can challenge them. Anyone who's 'influenced' by this evil ****e is going to find a justification somewhere, somehow.

I can't believe you can buy this anti-Semetic, anti-Black book on Amazon.co.uk.

Okay, you got me there. I meant in things like books, films etc, not things like weapons.

I stand justifiably corrected by you LeatherTrumpet.

That's 'anti-Semitic'.

You can buy Mein Kampf on Amazon. So what? Ban thing and you give them a status and meaning that they just don't deserve.

Again as in so many things with you, I agree with that Livia.

Hello Joey... always nice to see you.

I think a book entitled how to make a large fertilizer bomb should be banned as should one entitled how to make poisons to kill your relatives.

i would also ban autobiographies and childrens books by celebrities who have no identifiable talent save being on the telly

Livia 27-07-2011 01:39 PM

"How to make a Fertiliser Bomb" and "How to Poison your Relatives" should probably never be published. You're right about the "celebrity" books though, written by more talented writers who get no credit.

After Mark Chapman shot John Lennon, he took a copy of Catcher in the Rye out of his pocket and read it while he waited for the police. When they arrived, he told them that if they wanted to know why he’d shot Lennon, they should read Catcher in the Rye. A copy of the book was also found on the coffee table of John Hinckley, who had tried to assassinate Ronald Reagan. I guess all books can be dangerous of the person reading it is a wacko.

You're for living in the old Soviet Union? Jesus Christ! Books should NEVER be banned. That's Orwellian!
