Are Any Of The Original Concepts Still Here?

Big Brother is about:

Constantly being watched by the public - Live Feed. GONE
Sinister nature of the programme. GONE
Social experiment aspect. GONE
No contact with the outside world. GONE
Robotic, inanimate Big Brother voices to make them feel locked up. GONE
Marcus' simplicity. GONE
Watching people in a real house rather than it obviously being a TV show. GONE
Vote to evict, makes no guarantees to popularity. GONE
Minimalistic editing. GONE
True reality. GONE
Not knowing what public are thinking. Partially gone.

These are all the reasons I loved Big Brother as Big Brother and they are gone. They are the original concepts and in my mind Back To Basics is what the format needed. Now it is just entertainment with out a concept.

exactly

producers will never learn that the reason the viewing figures have dwindled over past 5 years or so is because they ruined the original BB concept

the stupid minority are the loudest though

silent majority want the old BB back

Hasn't been tried since BB4. How do you know?
However I understand the majority will enjoy this mulled down version of great potential.

The only reason later BBs got low ratings was because of Channel 4 started to get gimmicky, and badly select housemates. IMO.

Charlie, I completely agree with you. I love watching people getting to know each other and the most enjoyable part of BB was watching strangers interact and form relationships. I want to hear what they're saying to each other and watch how the react to different hms... half if tonights show was watching Kerry take part in a piss poor task!

You can't judge the celebrity version for this. Its not normal people and show has always been very different to the regular version.

Wait and see what the main show is like before jugding these things. But then again I love Big Brother for the post bb5 "evil" big brother. If its just people laying about at Summer camp I don't want to watch. Mabye BBUSA has spoiled me but I want drama and struggles, friendships and trials. Not boring ****s sitting around doing nothing.

But the 'Rotating Summer Model Party' wasn't flowing anymore either. Given that the original BB concepts haven't been tried in nearly a decade I would suggest they would have been 'New all over again'.

OP is right - they have really stripped it of nearly every single concept that made it Big Brother.
Its really just Big Brother in name only.
If its just edited highlights of a group of crazy gym bodies being outrageous then I suppose I will just watch Jersey Shore.

Same, its incredibly manipulated and they are giving certain housemates all the limelight and these are the one dimensional ones who are not stimulating what so ever. I miss the old days
We have no genuine housemate conversations and I don't think we will be getting many at all.

The show has moved on, and the original core audience needs to move with it. Yes, it was the 'real' BB, but the public has changed, with a new perception of what is entertaining. 5 would simply not put effort into producing aspects of the show that the general public do not want. Most of the changes are small. I don't think the majority of veiwers will realise that Big Brother is no longer sinister, or that the editing style has changed. If anything, it more closely resembles what is most popular on TV today. I don't think the show will ever be a social experiment again either. That ended at the same time BB1 did. Similarly, back to basics would no longer work, because it would just be perceived at as 'boring.' As early as 2004, the producers noticed that. They will only do what the majority wants, because that's what sells and what achieves viewing figures. For years, fans have been complaining of Big Brother turning stale. Now it's been freshened up and tbh, I think it's for the better, and if not to please the core, traditional fans, to at least give it a prolonged life for a few more years. The flaws don't lie in the direction BB has taken, but in the way that that direction has been produced for the past few years.

hey guess what?

IT'S 20 ****ING 11.

CharlieO 19-08-2011 11:03 PM

But surely if nothing that originally defined BB is still there, then how is it at all Big Brother apart from the name?

Conor 19-08-2011 11:23 PM

But the only thing consistent throughout the world that defines Big Brother is being locked in a space and watched 24/7 with minimal outside contact and nominations & evictions. That is the basic format for every series ever made. Without that it isn't BB. Everything else varies from series to series and country to country. Anything additional is at the producers discretion and with or without whatever they choose to do it will still be Big Brother. Almost any TV show that has ran for more than a few series has changed in some way to adjust to changing audiences. They have to, or else they just fail. It's a no win situation- either stay the same and get axed or change and continue.

Right. So why are we still watching old 2006-era Big Brother?
