Simon Bird has revealed new details about his comedy Chickens.

The sitcom stars Bird, Inbetweeners co-star Joe Thomas and comedian Jonny Sweet as three young men who remain at home during the First World War.

Bird told TV Choice: "We're always trying to write stuff about groups of people who are often forgotten about and this seemed like an area of life that hadn't had much light and attention.

"When people talk about [the First World War], it's all about the soldiers who went off to fight, you don't see much about what happened in England when the war was on."

Bird, who plays army reject Cecil, also admitted that he had enjoyed starring in a period comedy.

"With it being set so far in the past, it enabled us to do it in the same way as Mad Men, where they're allowed to be sexist, smoke loads and drink," he explained. "We had some fun."

However, the comic actor also insisted that Chickens does not make fun of conscientious objectors.

"They were definitely treated as the scum of the earth," he conceded. "[But] they were very brave and courageous men in their own way."

Chickens airs on Friday, September 2 at 10.30pm on Channel 4.

Sounds good. Don't know Jonny Sweet, but like both the Inbetweeners actors. Will definitely watch this, see how good it is :)
