65 year old should know better

Pyramid* 07-09-2011 11:48 AM

You know Arista, I saw this too...... compare that to the Lauren Booth situation and the thread on here about her hate rally.

How on earth can putting a golliwog up at a window being classed as a race hate crime - but standing up in public wishing harm to people you don't even know, not be.

The UK law is a joke. Complete farce.

Livia 07-09-2011 12:08 PM

This will be some white, middle-class leftie getting all wound up on nehalf of a minority. Black friends of mine told me they never would have given the Golly a second thought if it hadn't been for white people drawing it to their attention. I had a Golly when I was very little and didn't for one instant think it was a parody of a black person. It was a Golly... a fictional creature... like a teddy, or a gnome, or a fairy. I'd be interested in what any black members of the forum think.

Ammi 07-09-2011 12:16 PM

Sounds like grown ups behaving like children, and a bunch of busybodies stirring it into something. If it was intentionally and provocatively done, then the 65 year old is just a sad, pathetic old bigot

The 65 year old woman has done this to get a fight.

From reading the article. The old woman knew exactly what she was doing. Clearly did it to be racist.

I did not suggest she didn't. I'm well aware that it has been a deliberate act. What I said was if you look again at my first post on this thread: what is the difference in this and her action being regarded as a criminal offence; and what Lauren Booth taking part in, not.

In my eyes, both are the same thing. Yet one is breaking the law, and one is not. That's my point.

Ammi 07-09-2011 12:31 PM

If this was intentional and deliberately insulting, then of course it is without doubt racist and unacceptable. I think the point made was that at 65, this woman is from a time when a golly wasn't thought of in any way as a parody, I too had one and it was a doll, like any other doll and that was all. I never once considered any deeper meaning to it. I don't know what the intent was in this case

Ithink the point that might be the issues: why would such a dolly suddenly be placed in midst of disharmony with a black neighbour - which I presume has happened. ie; the dolly wasn't always there?

I'm sure that it may have been viewed as an innocent dolly years ago (when i too had a golliwog) - but given the animosity between the neighbours - if the 65 year old has put up the dolly amidst this aggro, I think it's fairly clear what her intent is. imo anyway.

What I disagree with is that this behaviour is deemed to be criminal vs behaviour in the same realm, not.

lostalex 07-09-2011 12:39 PM

As a gay man, if i was not getting along with a neighbor, and i see them put some doll with a rainbow flag an a pink boa in the window, i'd know exactly what they were doing.

This isn't about whether or not you can have a gollywog, it's about trying to intimidate someone for being a minority.

I'm not sure about the 'being in the minority' though I understand what you mean, but it certainly seems to be an act that has been borne out of racial hatred and/ or done with full intent to antagonise the neighbour based on her race/skin colour.

It's not as though the pc issues surrounding golliwogs over the past 20 years have been raised in dark corners, hands cupped round ears whilst whispering etc.

I think the woman is trying to get away with her action based on the fact that a golliwog was an innocent children's dolly when she had one .... in in the camp that she knew EXACTLY what she was doing.

Grow up Alex. Read the last sentence of my post. I said I'd be interested to hear what black members of the forum think.

On Ch5HD Wright Stuff this morning
they said a small shop is selling them?

Zippy 07-09-2011 02:36 PM

I want a Golliwoggy!

and yes she was being a racist bitch. That said, I don't get why certain insults are considered worse than other insults in legal terms. If she put a Miss Piggy doll in her window to insult a fat neighbour would she be charged? I doubt it.

GiRTh 07-09-2011 03:23 PM

This woman is an idiot. I dont think most black people still find this offensive. She wanted to get a rise out of middle class white lefties and she's done it.

Remember they golliwog on Robertsons jam jars?
