What makes Great Britain great?

Sensible answers please. I've been struggling with this country for a while now, don't get me wrong, I am glad I was brought up here, but I personally have lost any love for this country that I once had.

Other than the countryside and some great views I seem to have lost faith in everything else this country has to offer and find myself getting very irritated with the majority of the British population.

So what makes the UK great for you?

Grimnir 09-09-2011 11:47 AM

InOne 09-09-2011 11:49 AM

Not a lot. Britain just seems to be plodding along at the moment.

*whinges about small matters while forgetting we live in a country where rapists and murderers get punished, where famine doesn't exist, where we have technology that makes our lives 100x better than some countries*

BUT IT R ALWAIS RAINEH

- We are Amazing at most sports really good all rounders considering the population compared to other countries Cricket, Football, Rugby, Darts, Snooker, Athletics, Rowing, Sailing, Equestrian events, Motorsports, Boxing and Golf from the top of my head i can think of at least 1 person or national team that are world class in each of those areas

And that's all that really matters

The Spirit of the Blitz, Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding, garden gnomes, the choirs of Wales, the Bagpipes, stiff upper lips. Cooked Breakfasts. British Beer. The ability to laugh at ourselves. Shakespeare, Keates Shelley Byron The Cornish Pasty A small group of small countries that had the balls and the people to go out and conquer half the world and then when the time was right let Johnny foreigner take over the reigns of his own destiny. Three lines of Muskets. The British Square. Morris Dancers, Men in Kilts, Pop Festivals spent swimming in mud, allotments, Caravanning. The Womans Institute, the British Legion, The Spirit of The Bayonet. Working mens clubs, Thats Life, Jeremy Clarkson. The Archers. Tunnocks Teacakes, Traffic Wardens, Best Music Scene in the World. and a million and one other things that only us British could love.

What is it you've been struggling with? It must be tough living in such a culturally enriched, relatively well off country having to read the odd story about someone you never met perhaps not getting as much time in jail as they should have.

Britain is great. And I aint even British.

Excellent question for a discussion.

One I find increasingly hard to answer.

As much as I've always been loyal to my country - Scotland first, but part of the UK as a whole, I do feel we are becoming an embarrassment.

I am sickened by your post.............. How could you have forgotten about a special mention for Runrig, Ewan McGregor, Billy Connolly, the best malts in the world, the outstanding scenery, the beautiful castles and Celtic Connections....

Actually, all kidding aside; all of the above plus your own reasons are the things I am proud of to be fair.

Lee. 09-09-2011 03:31 PM

Joking aside, I am thankful for where I live. We don't have drought, famine or war. We aren't bothered by earhquakes, tsunamis, tornados or monsoons, nor do we have huge poisonous snakes or spiders.

We do have our problems, but all in all Britain is a safe, pleasant place to stay. Shame the weathers **** but hey ho, we can't have everything. :)

Shasown 09-09-2011 03:32 PM

If I had put runrig, would have had to put lindisfarne, also manics oasis blue etc that list is bloody endless. Ewan? what about Gerald, Sean Kevin etc, then down to England Wales and Northern Ireland for theirs too, I tried to please people but hey, bloody scots women are never satisfied, well at least with lists ;)

Z 09-09-2011 03:34 PM

All things considered, we've got it good here. There might be problems with our country but they're nowhere near as damaging as things like famine, cruel dictatorship, out of control disease problems... We take it for granted, I think, so I guess the things that make this country great are the things we take for granted.

Oi....don't go blaming me for your lack of prowess. If you ain't got it, you ain't got it. ;)

I agree in huge amounts: and back to all the Inventors -past and present - there is a lot we should (need?) to be reminded of - look past the downside of the UK and be proud of what we have achieved, and still do.

Tattooed ********wits playing soldiers?

nah...I'd rather give my respect to the young lads who sign up and put their lives on the line, rather than idiots who think they look good pretending to do it.

Call me fickle, but there it is.

It's this type of very thing that actually embarasses me.

What lack of prowess? Please read my posts right till the end not just to the comma.

Difficult concept for a plum but stick with it, you will eventually manage it.

If you have to ask what is great about Great Britian, then you have no pride in your country, maybe that's what's lacking

Becks puts his life on the line when he plays football you haven't been watching the MLS league he gets fouled every 5 minutes because he is so good he just gets back up again straight away though as you would expect a Immortal God to do and i will also have you know Becks was in very dangerous lands there one of Bin Laden's henchmen could have shot him anytime but Becks would have saw it coming 10 minutes before it happened so it's okay.
