Have you ever been 'cyber bullied?'

After a man was jailed for insulting comments on dead teenagers' social network sites I thought I'd ask - Have you ever been bullied online?

I've not been bullied as such but have been harassed.... Which is why I firmly believe this is a good message to send out to these idiots.

Opinions on action you believe suitable? If indeed any.

Jords 14-09-2011 12:14 AM

Im not sure if bullying is the word but I was harrassed and insulted by somebody over the internet quite a few times, always told him to bring it up to my face but the chicken sh!t never did.

Kerry 14-09-2011 12:14 AM

Oh yeah, forgot to add. This isn't about TiBB wars. :)

lostalex 14-09-2011 12:18 AM

i have been cyber bullied, and i have been a cyber bully.

I think everyone that knows me knows that i am much more conscious of what i say lately, and i really try to control my words more. I know i do have a nasty streak in me. I'm really trying to curb it, and i think as i get older, i have been more controlled online.

I think unfortunately the internet does breed bullies, just based on the anonymity of it. I think it's like homophobes, usually the most homophobic people are closet homosexuals, and i think very often online the most bullied people in real life, become bullies online. (this applies to both posters AND mods)

Just my 2 cents.

Shasown 14-09-2011 01:03 AM

PMSL That was amusing, seeing posts disappear.

Cant say i have been bullied in cyber space, have dealt with people who thought they could try bullying members on my own site but nah, got it sorted PDQ.

I suppose some people could be intimidated by my "gentle" nature every once in a while, its not intended though and for that in just this one thread I do apologise.

Kerry 14-09-2011 01:08 AM

And I'd just like to point out I deleted posts rather than bollock people about talking about banned members and taking the thread off topic. Fine if it was in chat but it ain't. If you'd rather me warn or infract then so be it but oddly, I figured a tidy would suffice.

Now stop bloody moaning, miserable lot :p

Shasown 14-09-2011 01:14 AM

While we are all pointing out things I would just like to point out that I didnt moan. I only moan as I approach orgasm.

Kerry 14-09-2011 01:21 AM

I've put the post back. If you want it deleted again Alex let me know

I deleted some posts as they went offtopic and were talking about banned members which generally isn't allowed. I figured it better to delete them and (hoped!) leave it at that. Nothing more.

Anyway - cyber bullying.........

Dilligaf 14-09-2011 02:17 AM

I don't think i have ever been bullied but i have had an American communications expert threaten to come over and shoot me. I laughed until he told me the street my local exchange was situated at.
The site owner banned the lunatic and called the police. I never heard anything about it again.

GypsyGoth 14-09-2011 02:48 AM

Nope, I've never been cyber bullied. I tend to avoid arguments and confrontation, so if anyone picked on me, I'd log off and avoid them.

I like you lostalex :)

I never said i was intimidated. I never asked for any help either. I don't get worried about people online. As far as i am concerned, i don't have an attitude at all.

I have a story. We all have a story in some way.

Kerry 14-09-2011 04:05 AM

Now kiss and make up

Really?

I didn't think there was anything wrong with liking someone who said what they thought. I'd prefer that to someone who just says what other people want to hear.

It depends on what your definition of "cyber bullying."

I mean, I guess people have attempted to cyber bully me but without success.

Visage 14-09-2011 07:27 AM

I've never experienced cyberbullying and if someone has attempted to do that to me they've not been very successful, otherwise I would be here saying the opposite.

Tibb 'wars' aside where people simply do not gel, is one thing, but people who go out of their way to be nasty, insulting and abusive to people online - whether on their own or in gangs - is bullying - whichever way it's put - whether that be on FB or any other social networking site or a forum.

It happens often: it is how it is handled, and how the bullies are dealt with that makes a difference - ie: are they given a clear message to condemn the bullying/harassing, do their actions show that it will not be tolerated? or is it allowed to continue and not appropriately knocked on the head right away - which gives the message that it is allowed, which in turn, gives free passage to allow those doing the bullying to continue- and get worse because they do get away with it.

As far as the linked story is concerned: that's a more extreme version of what we see happening all the time. As for linked story: guy got (legally) less than he deserved, time wise imo. I'm sure he'll be experiencing bullying on the other side of the fence soon. I'm sure he won't find it so funny as he had done in the past.

CharlieO 14-09-2011 09:39 AM

Sort of but its never affected me in a way I would deem as bullying.

Maia 14-09-2011 10:42 AM

I have been seriously cyberbullied in the past. The worst was in 2008 when a group of people I really thought were my friends ganged up against me and plotted to have my online accounts hacked and destroyed. They used my best friend at the time to trick me into handing over my passwords, which, because I trusted him, I foolishly did. He locked me out of my accounts (bar one that I was able to talk to him on) and started blackmailing me telling me if I didn't do certain things I wouldn't get them back. I literally couldn't do anything and I felt powerless.

Thankfully he gave them back to me, against the other group members' wishes, and obviously as you'd expect I've never been stupid enough to give out my passwords ever since
