Blu-ray player sales to overtake DVD by 2015, says report

Blu-ray player sales will overtake DVD within four years, according to a report.

Research company In-Stat claimed that 105 million high definition players will be sold in 2015, while DVDs will see a decline, Home Media Magazine reports.

The market analyst also predicted the demise of DVD recorders within the next three years, suggesting that many customers may even turn their backs on physical media formats entirely.

"Blu-ray recorders will replace DVD recorders," said Norm Bogen, vice president of digital entertainment with In-Stat. "Many consumers of recorders will even drop the physical disk media option altogether and instead opt for a player with a large hard drive, or digital media storage."

Panasonic and other companies have already picked up on the trend. The manufacturer recently announced a range of HDD recorders that also offer video on demand services.

In-Stat's data also suggests that DVD recorders may continue to sell in Japan, despite Blu-ray player sales being highest in the territory. However, the format is losing out to China Blue High-Definition in the Chinese market.

North America accounted for 38% of global Blu-ray player shipments last year.
I have a Blu-ray player and although I do think the quality is a lot better on there, I can't see myself getting rid of my DVD players anytime soon.

God no.

I only have Blu Ray on my PS3 and don't think it's all that.

I love my blu ray player, it upgrades picture quality on dvd's, and you can play downloaded movies on it. My best friend thinks Blu-ray is a waste of money, but i love mine.

That being said, i still have a DVD player and i still even have a VHS player. When i was in highschool my friends and i made a million videos, so to watch them i still need the VHS. I should transfer them onto dvd eventually, but i never get around to it.

With a Good LCD or LED TV
BluRay is Bliss.

I am now on BluRay 3-D
with DTS HD Sound
8 speakers.

That is Ultra Bliss.

I think at the moment for me there's no incentive to get a Blu-ray player. I'm not too fussed about HD and the backwards compatibility means that I'd hardly ever bother with Blu-ray discs when the cheaper option is still availble.

But many Blu Rays are under £8

Or the same price as the DVD.

Amazon and Play.com
do great offers.

What's the point in getting a player when i'm not interested in HD? BR looks prettier but they don't do much else diferently to DVDs.

Because 1 Blu Ray can hold more Extras on a one disc
compared to a DVD

Blu-ray players arn't just about watching HD though, they usually have so many other features, like internet connectivity, and being able to use USB memory sticks to watch movies.

True

Plenty of DVD players can play movies from USB sticks.

I love Blu Ray. I can't afford that many of them these days but if It's a big new release that I really want of course I'll go with the best possible option available to me being a pretentious film student and all that. The quality is demonstrably better - moreso with sound than with picture actually. Although the picture is sexy too.
