Language Question: Aswell?

Hope I don't offend (too many) people with this question, but it's been bugging me for a while now. I'm from the US, and I know there are several differences between the English and American spellings of certain words (color/flavor etc), but I've noticed that a ton of people that post on here use the "word" aswell. I googled and couldn't find anything to suggest that that's proper English anywhere. Is that just a common thing, or is there something I'm missing? Sadly, I notice a ton of people on US message boards that seem to think that "alot" is a word, but I don't think I've noticed "aswell" before reading these boards.

Shouldn't that be "a ton of people who post," and yea I think aswell is pretty commonly used, it doesn't bother me at all, same for alot.

Kerry 01-10-2011 03:29 AM

It means 'also' (or similar)

US Nacho 01-10-2011 03:33 AM

Well, I know that it's commonly used. That was part of my observation in the original post. I was asking if it was correct or not.

Speaking of commonly used, but incorrect, your post reminded me of another pet peeve of mine. Seems like about half the people that post (US and UK) don't know the difference between yea and yeah. Or, more likely know the difference, but don't care. yea/yeah probably bothers me more than your/you're, to be honest.

Well, I think (Could be wrong) that when people use it, they are trying to say "as well" but they incorrectly think that aswell is actually a word.

If every person that used it was savagely beaten until they died or stopped, that would be perfectly fine with me.

If you watch the same people type over and over you start to see patterns. Using yea in place of yeah once or twice might be a typo, but after you see it enough, you have to accept the fact that lots of people simply don't know the difference.

I think my opinion of someone's intelligence wouldn't be swayed by them using aswell if I knew that THEY knew that it wasn't really a proper word and that they were just using it as slang or whatever. Someone once called me out for using the word "dunno" instead of "don't know". For me, that's just common slang and acceptable because I know it to be as such.

I guess the main point of me creating this thread was wondering how many of the people that use aswell actually know that it's not a proper word and are just using it as slang/txtspeak/whatever to be cool vs how many actually think that it's a real word.

I'll correct you one more time :D

"If every person who..." should be the start of your sentence. "That" is used for objects and "who" is used for people.

US Nacho 01-10-2011 03:48 AM

Obviously that's not something that bothers me in the slightest.

No, you are correct.

You'll notice a lot of posters using the word 'of', instead of the correct word 'have'.

ie: you should of voted for Heaven
