The family of a Derbyshire man who was injured in Indonesia say he is now ready to return home.

Matthew Taylor, 30, who suffered serious head injuries in a motorcycle crash in Bali in July, spent three months in a coma.

His family has paid more than £200,000 in medical costs in Singapore because he was uninsured.

His stepfather Simon Moore said the family was "elated" that he was coming home.

'Financially crippling'

Mr Taylor, who is from Swadlincote but was teaching on Bali when he was injured, is expected to arrive back in the UK on 10 October where he will be treated at Nottingham Queen's Medical Centre.

Mr Moore said: "It has been absolutely crippling to us [financially]."

The family held a service at Derby Cathedral a few weeks ago, where they lit 400 candles to represent the 400 Britons seriously injured abroad without insurance over the past year.

Mr Taylor's situation has led Andrew Bridgen, Conservative MP for North West Leicestershire, to call for new legislation requiring Britons travelling abroad to make sure they have adequate insurance cover before leaving the UK.
I guess some people think it's worth the risk .....

What a silly ******. I never go travelling, adventuring or backpacking without travel insurance, it's not worth that risk.

This. Travel insurance is not that expensive anyway!

I get it free with HSBC though for 30 days a year! :)

It's completely stupid. Hell, my normal current account with my bank has free insurance for travelling abroad built in as a benefit along with many other benefits, for a fiver a month.

As others have said, even purchasing it individually, it's inexpensive.

Hell mend anyone who ventures abroad without it, they get everything they deserve: unfortunately, normally it's their families and friends who are left to cough up - which shows how selfish they really are.
