"Ricky Gervais has come under attack
by Down’s syndrome groups over his
frequent use of the word ‘mong’ to describe
people he thinks are stupid.
The comedian claims that its meaning has changed
from a derogatory term for those suffering with the
chromosome disorder to meaning nothing more than ‘complete idiot’."

I do not use this word
but as he is a Public person
he knows full well Twitter - then Papers -Then TV

It was debated this morning on ITV1HD Daybreak
with a down under comedy bloke
and a Lady that says its a Hate Crime use.

Maybe he could now say
He will no longer use it
still standing by what he claims,

fruit_cake 21-10-2011 07:36 AM

Ricky's probably loving the extra attention this is giving him.

Nothing wrong with calling someone a mong

Well he got a lot of people saying it is wrong
due to disabled kids.

Crimson Dynamo 21-10-2011 10:31 AM

idiot, imbecile, moron are all words that were medical terms that have crossed over. Words evolve.

He does not mean disabled he means stupid people only and journalists should not call charities and ask them loaded questions and then write stories saying "This and that charity slams Gervais.."

It is also timed well to coincide with his new dwarf comedy "Life's too short"

arista 21-10-2011 11:21 AM

new dwarf comedy "Life's too short"

Thats Great

Chuck 21-10-2011 11:30 AM

I wonder if disabled kids feel personally offended when someone calls someone else a mong or it's just the PC brigade being annoying as usual.

LaLaLand 21-10-2011 11:30 AM

He most irritating man on TV. How people find him funny is beyond me.

if you dont find The Office or Extras funny then I can honestly tell you that you have no sense of humour

Its that simple

Kazanne 21-10-2011 01:17 PM

I noticed Locke used this word on the forum yesterday and it did make me wonder if it is still seen as offensive,I tuned into the Wright stuff this morning and they were having a debate about it also(weird),I suppose it depends on whether the person using it knows what it is short for and I would think it would be offensive to parents of Down Syndrom kids, not sure on this one

Shaun 21-10-2011 01:52 PM

I'd usually be on Gervais' side because I'm a big fan of his... but this just came off as shoddy attention-seeking and controversy-churning to me :( he's been a bit of an arsehole on Twitter (I followed him).

Tom 21-10-2011 01:56 PM

Funny debate about it on this mornings Daybreak, it didn't go well and ended with Kate Garraway justifying the use of pictures of Colonel Gaddafi :joker:

MTVN 21-10-2011 02:13 PM

Tbh I've always associated "Mong" with meaning disabled, and even if he didn't mean any offence Gervais does comes across as a bit of prick here

This is exactly what I thought..I'd just seen the graphic pictures of Gaddafi and they say they wouldn't broadcast what Rick said so as not to cause offence....I wonder if any school children were watching...'Oh this is what to do to bad people, children.....but let's be PC about it..'

When Tasmin was doing her bulletin, she said "this feature contains graphic pictures which some viewers may find distressing" so yeah I think they were graphic. Maybe not as graphic as what was shown on a loop on Sky News yesterday because they were selective due to it being breakfast TV, but if they weren't graphic then they wouldn't have had to issue a warning

That whole debate this morning was just silly coming right off the back of those pictures and the "comedian" was right to pick up on it (didn't agree with how he spoke to the woman from the charity though), if they did a warning for that then why didn't they just do a warning for the word? Or if Kate felt that strongly against it why didnt they just show the tweet after a warning?

Its probably on ITV Player, if anyones after seeing it, it was on around 7.40 so will be about an hour & half in

Novo 21-10-2011 03:04 PM

Mong sounds like some sort of animal.. like a wild dog or something

Life In The Fast Lane

Crimson Dynamo 21-10-2011 03:50 PM

Its not a nice word but neither is moron and its common currency. His new show is about dwarfs and in the US you cant say dwarf as that is a bad word there (not here) but yet his show will go out on HBO.

The gaddafi stuff is not graphic it is real and kids should look at it and be told this is what happens to bad men.
