"Several" people were killed and up to 35 hurt in a 27-vehicle crash on the M5 near Bridgwater, Somerset, police say.

Police said they were still trying to free people after the crash, which happened between junctions 23 and 26, at about 20:30 GMT on Friday.

Emergency crews said the cause was not clear, but there had been reports of heavy rain and fog in the area.
Terrible, not often an accident as bad as this happens

Fetch The Bolt Cutters 05-11-2011 02:34 AM

King Gizzard 05-11-2011 02:37 AM

It's the worst one in British history apparently

Kerry 05-11-2011 03:34 AM

Caught a little on the news. Awful :(

Tom 05-11-2011 05:58 PM

Terrible news and reading about it is awful. I remember during the freeze at the end of last year/start of this year I was in one where rain was literally freezing as it touched the road and peoples cars were spinning out of control on the black ice. Scary as anything. I was one of the lucky ones in that, but it was horrible

Jords 05-11-2011 05:59 PM

:o

Fetch The Bolt Cutters 05-11-2011 05:59 PM

Judas 05-11-2011 11:45 PM

This was at the junction of where my parents live (literally 10 minutes away), it seems even worse when it's so close to somewhere you know.

Kerry 06-11-2011 04:36 AM

I shudder every time I see it

mizzy25 06-11-2011 08:05 AM

awful

Tom 06-11-2011 12:59 PM

Nothing bugs me more than lorries in the middle lane like the Iceland one clearly was. Just saying

Shaun 06-11-2011 01:40 PM

I know it's probably a selfish observation but I was travelling home roughly the same time as this and I'm just so glad I got the train because I'd have been on that road :( such a horrible tragedy.

arista 06-11-2011 02:35 PM

The Police are now saying
the Fog plus the near by Firework Bonfire Smoke
made the area to hard to see.

That Bonfire should not have been there
so near.

MTVN 06-11-2011 03:21 PM

It sounds so horrific, a guy they interviewed in the paper said an Iceland lorry just completely vanished in the fog and they were able to brake in time but other cars just kept going straight into it at 70mph, and they just kept piling up, people were literally being burnt alive inside their vehicles :( the Rugby club were having a bonfire and fireworks display about 15 minutes away from the motorway which might have been a big cause of it apparently

Yeah lorries overtaking lorries are very frustrating

Sticks 06-11-2011 06:09 PM

Looks like it was caused by a fireworks display at a rugby club

If that is the case all those involved should ne sent to prison for manslaughter if not murder

It was Thick Smoke from that Display.

Sticks 06-11-2011 06:40 PM

Which makes the organiser culpable in every single one of those deaths. Given the weather conditions prevailing that night, they should have cancelled the entire event.

Benjamin 06-11-2011 10:46 PM

I had wondered why the motorway was blocked off yesterday and today when I went down to Exeter. Such a horrible devastation, I feel for all those involved.

Marc 07-11-2011 06:05 PM

This news story is sad :( especially as they keep showing the old welsh couple who died.
