why are there so many accents this year?

richard - canadian
mikey - liverpudlian
glyn - welsh
imogen - welsh
lisa - manunian (or however you spell it)
nikki - just trying to be upper class

THEY NEED TO PUT SUBTITLES ON MORE OFTEN, i can barely understand what these people are saying? does anyone else have the same problem?

Deep2 17-06-2006 09:28 PM

UUUUM Edweep you called me shallow for posting on looks and now you post on accent....uuum, you hypocrite. Shallow!!
Who cares? As you so aptly put it.

BB-Rocks 17-06-2006 09:29 PM

I can understand it all although Glyn and Imogen are quite hard sometimes

And how is Nikki trying to be upper class .. even if she did how is that to get understand

It's my belief that the tone and diction that Nikki uses when she is angry or upset is mistaken for a faux upper class accent.

talk about cheap shot, i bet you were parading around "edweep" searches to find your target.

I was merely posting on how frustrating it is when you can't understand what they're saying because of their accent, how is that shallow?

No, you said "trying to be upper class". This would be Nikki delibrately trying to come across as something she is not.

I said that when she is angry or upset uses diction and a tone that could be mistaken for an upper class accent.
This is a misunderstanding of the person observing her.

This is not the same as what you said.

ever heard nikki complain about how she thinks she is "middle class"

This is the fault of the viewer and not what you said.
well it doesn't take a genius to realise that nikki is trying to sound posh by over-pronouncing every word, and it was a joke, no need to make it the main topic of the godamn thread.

Legend 17-06-2006 09:49 PM

Mikey's mumbling annoys me but i'm used to it by now, every ba$tard in the street talks like that. I've been practicing and i can nearly talk at a normal pace with only a bit of mumbling!

Well then Genius, my guess is that your OP was incorrect and should have said "trying to sound posh / upper class" not "trying to be upper class"

This is another thread were you make statement and then ask for people to comment upon that statement and then don't like it when people respond.
It was hardly belittling when I said people are mistaken about her accent - you then tried to pass the comment off as the same thing where it clearly wasn't.

well many other people replied and you're the only one that annoyed me because you weren't even answering the question, and just pointing out a miniscule mistake i made in the original post.

Seriously Edwin, forget it now.

Legend...... totally agree about Mikey. Every few words it's like...sorry?? What was that???? lol.

pete_thomson 17-06-2006 10:13 PM

OK - that's a fair comment.

But no, I dont have a problems with the accents. In my job I travel all over Europe, and I mostly only get a problem with people that can barely speak English. I'm not proud to say, but my skills in other languages is poor so have to rely on English :nono:

Regional accents are no problems for me but I'm glad there are no Glaswegians in the house as I find that I have to listen a few words behind trying to keep up with some of them!!!

Conversations between Mikey and Glyn are a disaster, between Mikey's mumbling and Glyn's accent on a whole, it's like listening to 2 japanese people have a full on coversation.

booty-full 17-06-2006 10:18 PM

He was so damn annoying but at the same time I was split when he left.... On one side it was ad that he left because the drama was good television..... on the other hand the cracks in the rest of the house began to show at long last

Deep2 17-06-2006 11:30 PM

I have no trouble understanding people, except Mikey when he mumbles - but that's mumbling, not an accent.

Nikki's the easiest to understand because she's always over-enunciating (and I'll leave the upper class comment alone, since it's already established that she's not doing that)

I have to make a comment on your listing of accents, though.
Richard doesn't exactly have a "Canadian" accent - it's more like he's trying to affect some British inflections, but running it all through a Bette Davis filter.

And don't forget Susie's fake posh accent. You KNOW she didn't talk like that as a child. She probably picked it up when she started trying to marry a rich man.
