Young Mother Killed By A Train After Dropping Phone

Quote:

Relatives of a young mother killed after jumping on railway tracks to retrieve her mobile phone have said "our world has been shattered".
Charlene Pickering, 23, was hit by an express train travelling at 60mph when she climbed down from a platform after dropping the handset.
She had been travelling home with her boyfriend after watching a Chelsea football match when she was hit by the 7.15pm London Waterloo to Exeter service on Sunday night.

Family members said they had lost the light of their lives in a statement issued through British Transport Police.

Relatives said: "Our world has been shattered by the tragedy that occurred on Sunday. Charlene was the light of our lives and with her infectious smile she brightened the world of all who knew her.
"She is survived by her four-year-old son Toby, who will fortunately have the support of his loving father Owen and his many family and friends to help him through this traumatic time.

"We wish to express our sincere gratitude for all the messages of sympathy and support at this sad time and respectfully ask for privacy whilst we come to terms with the devastating reality that our darling Charlene is gone."
Chief Inspector Alison Evans said: "We believe at this stage that Charlene went on to the tracks to retrieve her mobile phone before being struck by the train. This appears to have been a tragic accident and our thoughts remain with her family and friends at this very difficult and sad time for them."

Boyfriend Daniel Pickett paid tribute to Ms Pickering, from Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on Facebook. He posted a message on the social networking site saying: "If only heaven had a phone babygirl I would love to hear your voice just once more. I really am not looking forward 2 spending my life without you we had made so many plans and they have been so cruelly taken."

R.I.P,but I have got to say if I dropped my Mobile Phone on a Railway,I would just leave it as I wouldn't risk what happened to her.

What a crazy way to chuck your life away, reading some of the comments as well, talking about how the train driver must have felt, I never really thought about it before but it must be horrible to be in that position where you know you're about to drive a train into someone and kill them but you can't stop it

Thats why I hate people who kill themselves in such a way.

Very sad, RIP.

But how people could be so foolish is just beyond me...anyone that would jump onto a train track for any reason whatsoever is just a complete idiot. Nothing is worth that sort of risk.

Idiot woman

Tom4784 26-01-2012 08:06 PM

Such a waste. Nothing more frustrating then a death that could have been so easily avoided

Marc 26-01-2012 08:42 PM

What a horrible way to go :(

Doogle 26-01-2012 08:45 PM

Stupid woman.

I feel sorry for her family and most of all the driver, but sorry that was a totally moronic thing to do. I knew better than that from the first time I ever got on a train.

Marc 26-01-2012 08:47 PM

The driver must be a mess, poor guy

lostalex 27-01-2012 11:36 AM

I can't imagine anything that would cause me to jump onto the tracks, wtf was she thinking?

I wouldn't even jump onto the tracks for a million dollar bill.

I think maybe this was a suicide.

HBB1508 28-01-2012 02:15 AM

So sad but why would you do that - I lost my dog one day and she was on the railway tracks as we live next to them - thankfully she was one of the only dogs pulled off alive for that I'm ever thankful - I'm respectful of railway tracks and the trains that run on them.
