Being an island nation I don't think we're close to any other country. We're joined to the USA by a common language, but culturally I think we're very different. It's like asking if the USA is closer to Canada or Mexico, when the answer is probably neither.

The answer is the US is closer to Canada. ;) Though I am fond of Mexico.

Neither.. I'm living in continental Europe and regularly come into contact with Americans due to one of my job requirements and can safely say that there really isn't all that much in common to be found with either.

On paper I'd say USA. But personally I felt more 'at home' in Europe than I did in the states, it just felt more naturally like home to me
