Not so much on their breaks, it's not like you'd find a lot of MPs in there having a skinfull at lunchtime. Like the restaurants and dining rooms - all serve alcohol - they're mostly used for entertaining guests and visitors.

If you want to find a politician slacking off, he (or she) will be in the tea room, gossiping, in my experience.

They're all p***ed D:

InOne 08-02-2012 10:27 PM

Is it true they're allowed to smoke in their bar?

Livia 08-02-2012 10:36 PM

Legally, they are "allowed" to smoke in the bar, but it was agreed they wouldn't. There are outside smoking areas, but you're not allowed to smoke anywhere inside.

Why though? Is it not classed as a public place to them, like a private bar thing?

It is a private bar. Under the smoking ban, the Commons bar was exempt. There was a bit of an outcry and in the spirit of keeping people off their backs, they decided they would all agree not to smoke there in the spirit of upholding the ban.

On the subejct of politicians and drinking and stuff, isn't it true that the Chancellor is technically allowed to drink during the budget or something? I don't think it's ever been done in recent times though

So do all private clubs/bars have this right to smoke or just theirs?

Yes it is true. And yes, it has been done in recent times! Can't remember which chancellors... but a lot of them have taken advantage of it.

Just theirs. Which is why there was an outcry! Our constituency office has a private club downstairs and you aren't allowed to smoke there by law.
