5 ISPs ordered to block The Pirate Bay

A new court ruling has stated that filesharing site The Pirate Bay enables breaches of copyright laws.

Today (February 20) at the high court in London, Mr Justice Arnold ruled in favour of the record labels and music groups which want the site to be blocked in the UK, as it lets its users illegally download and share music.

The high court will decide in June if the website should be totally blocked to British internet service providers, however, today's ruling makes this outcome seem likely.

Of the ruling, chief executive of the British Phonographic Industry, Geoff Taylor, said, via The Guardian:

The high court today ruled that The Pirate Bay is illegal. The site defrauds musicians and causes huge damage to the music industry and wider creative industries... The ruling helps clarify the law on website blocking and we will now proceed with our application to have the site blocked to protect the UK's creative industries from further harm.

The Pirate Bay has 3.7 million UK users and 30 million users globally. In 2010, its founders had to pay a £4.1 million fine after being found guilty of enabling copyright infringement in Sweden.

It's fine for me [MF] but they have a pretty quick response time to taking down links. Just have to be quick I guess :p

Patrick 20-02-2012 08:46 PM

LOL Good.
I hate Torrent Snobs who download stuff that you can watch online anyway.

That would be no biggy just use the ip address instead to circumvent any block.
put 194.71.107.15 into your browser instead :)

Or install the TOR onion browser which uses a free vpn service and unblocks any blocked sites (and encrypts all data transmissions)
https://www.torproject.org/

or you could just change your DNS settings to use Google DNS OR Open DNS that would unblock it and only takes 30 seconds to do.
http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
http://www.opendns.com/

They have been about to shut the pirate bay down since the day it launched yet its still there. I wouldnt sweat it.

oh that sucks they usually just delete the entry from the dns server when they block and the ip adresss still works.

The TOR browser would work though.

Niall 20-02-2012 10:11 PM

Oh no. :(

I don't use this regularly, but I'm becoming progressively more worried now that the torrent sites are starting to go down. http://i.imgur.com/QizyP.gif

By the way the pirate bay could never go the way of megaupload as the usa have absolutely no jurisdiction to claim a .se domain name they can only shut down .com and in some cases .org domains

Plus there are already other plans in place incase the long long long long long and very expensive attempt to shut down torrent sites was ever successful there is another platform for sharing files ready to run that would involve another long long long long long and very expensive process to shut down :)

You cant put the genie back in the bottle and unless the big record/movie companys catch up they will cease to exist although new movies and music will continue to thrive.

Niamh. 21-02-2012 12:41 PM

yeah, we can't get onto Pirate bay if we have eircom as your internet provider, which most people have
