Justice for Trayvon

I don't know if you guys have already talked about this.

But I just heard the 911 call. You can hear Trayvon shouting for help before you hear gun shots.

Absolutely broke my heart and I shed tears. So devastating to hear that. I swear to god if anything like this ever happened to anyone I loved and I actually heard such an audio tape, I would actually kill that person myself and rue the consequences later. Heartbreaking.

If you haven't heard the story just google Trayvon Martin and the story and clips are all over it.
The Murderer claims it was self defence. He followed the little boy because he looked "suspicious"

That emergency services lady didn't exactly handle the matter with much urgency did she

Mrluvaluva 23-03-2012 01:45 AM

I have read some about this and seen it on the news. There seem to be two different angles on the story, depending on which reports you read. Some focus on the question of would this have happened if he was not "young, black and wearing a hoodie". Others around the gun laws. Apparently Florida has a law known as "stand your ground", which allows the use of deadly force if someone believes they are in danger of imminent death or great bodily harm. I also believe no state permit is required to possess or purchase a rifle, shotgun or handgun. It has been said, "this is not about a black and white thing, it's about a right and wrong thing." It seems to be about both to me. Either way, it's very sad.

I just read that Bill Lee is stepping down as Chief of police in Sanford. Not sure if this is a temporary measure or whether he will resign?

swinearefine 23-03-2012 02:49 AM

The Stand Your Ground law is absolutely asinine.

Quote:

Since the Stand Your Ground law took effect in Florida, the number of killings found to be justifiable homicide has jumped there. The annual number of such cases has gone from 13 a year on average before 2005 to an average of 36 a year after the law took effect.

Yes he is a dodgy officer
contacts head office, alot,
then shoots them.

As if his call is his back up story.

They are trained to remain calm and not alarm epople. The 911 lady handled herself perfectly.

I'm more disgusted with the Prosecutors not bringing charges against this guy than anyone else. It's the LAYWERS and the COPS in this case which have messed up.

Florida Laws are messed up, and the cops there that didn't arrest this guy right away.

It's interesting comparing it to the cases in the UK where people are arrested for killing legitamate criminals in self-defense,. and they are arrested for defending themselves, this case is like the exact opposite.

It's interesting how our countries have the same miscarriages of justice, but on different ends of the spectrum.

Niamh. 23-03-2012 09:52 AM

Oh I read about this on another forum. It's awful, I really hope that guy gets brought to justice, I've heard they've not even charged him yet though.

There's no way this is going away with all the media attention, they will have to do something soon, otherwise they are looking at an LA riots pt.2

Roy Mars III 23-03-2012 09:59 AM

very sad.

they'll charge the guy, like lostalex said, if only to stop something like the LA riots happening again

I hope so, It's beyond belief he's not been charged yet tbh

Three weeks ago in Sanford, Florida, a neighbourhood watch captain, George Zimmerman, shot dead an unarmed black teen, Trayvon Martin, as he walked home from the store. Zimmerman, who is Latino, called the emergency services because he thought Martin, 17, looked "suspicious" and then, against the advice of the dispatcher, followed him. The two men fought. Martin died. Zimmerman emerged, bleeding from the nose and the back of his head, claiming he shot Martin in self-defence because he was in fear of his life.

Zimmerman was neither charged nor arrested. Under Florida's "stand your ground" statute, deadly force is permitted if the person "reasonably believes" it is necessary to protect their own life, the life of another or to prevent a forcible felony. Zimmerman weighs 250lbs and had a 9mm handgun; Martin weighed 140lbs and had a packet of Skittles and a can of iced tea. Being a young black male, it seems, is reason enough.

One thing i do take issue with is the media describing the attacker guy as "white" he doesn't look "white" to me. He is clearly hispanic.

i know it sounds petty to mention, but the media did try to make it a quote "white" and "black" thing, but clearly this guy is not white. And as soon as they realized he wasn't white, we never heard anything more about the guys race, i wonder why that is? Why arn't they now making it a "hispanic" and "black" thing now?? I found that very disturbing. Why were so they so willing to talk about the race issue when they thought he was white, but then when they saw the shooter was hispanic, they arn't discussing HISPANIC racism against blacks?? especially considering historically the vast majority of slavery occurred in HISPANIC countries. So you can't say that there isn't a a historical context there.

I found that very disturbing about the American Media, that they will only talk about racism where it's a white aggressor, but to talk about racism when it's a non-white aggressor? then they don't talk about race anymore.

i've been followng the story since it first happened though, and at first they were describing him as "white" on CNN and all major news sources. And all of the commentary was about this "white" guy profiling a black teen. Since then they havn't been focusing so much on his race. They don't point out that the accussed is hispanic, instead they are just talking about racism against blacks in general. So why arn't they targeting HISPANIC racism against blacks?

There is definitely an intentional anti-white narrative in the US media.

Well, admittedly I haven't been following the case, I only heard about it recently, I take your point but I don't think it should detract from the point that this poor kid was gunned down simply because he was black and someone thought he was suspicious because of that.

BBfanUSA 23-03-2012 11:25 AM

This thing is all over the news. In New York there was a million hoodie march. I don't understand why we have racism today. If it was a black man shooting a white kid I bet the media wouldnt give a damn unfortunately. Or hardly at least

they wouldn't care if it was black on black either. they only care if a story can get viewers/sell papers. This one can, so they cover it like they are

Truer words were never spoken.

lostalex 23-03-2012 11:54 AM

It's cause the black kid was incredibly cute, unlike most black teens who often look much older than they are, this black teen looked like he could be in a saturday morning cereal commercial, and the guy that killed him looks like a monster.

It really is the press that decides what cases get attention. How many other murders have happened this week?

this is a particularly outrageous one though, and i'm glad it's getting attention. Florida's laws are insane, and they need to change. i'm glad the FBi is getting involved.
