Pilot 'Goes Nuts' With Mid-Air 'Bomb' Outburst

A JetBlue flight captain had to be tackled by his own passengers after he ran up and down a packed jet screaming about "bombs"and "al Qaeda" in a terrifying mid-air outburst.

The plane, en route from New York's JFK airport to Las Vegas, was forced into an emergency landing in Amarillo, Texas, as the ranting pilot was pinned down.

Alarmed passengers became aware of the incident when the co-pilot, seemingly worried by his colleague's erratic behavior, locked him out of his own cockpit when he left to use the bathroom.

The captain - identified by FOX News Channel as Milwaukee native Clayton Osbon - responded by banging angrily on the flight deck door, before running up and down the aisle screaming, "Say your prayers!" according to the New York Post.

His outburst prompted a panicked plea for help from a flight attendant.
Several passengers jumped out of their seats, choking and dragging Osbon to the floor and holding him down for about 15 minutes until the plane landed safely, thanks in part to an off-duty captain who happened to be on board.

Passenger David Gonzalez told FOX News Channel how Osbon ranted incoherently about Iran then headed towards an emergency exit.

Mr Gonzalez responded by making a grab for the captain and managed to choke him until he collapsed.

"I told him I'm gonna show you what Iran is like and I grabbed him and choked him," said Mr Gonzalez.

"I was able to choke him with my forearm. At that time I let go of his throat and tackled him to the floor."

"We were afraid he'd wake up," added Mr Gonzalez, who was headed to a security conference in Las Vegas.

"The pilot was a very large man, bigger than me," 6ft 3in (190cm) New Yorker Gabriel Schonzeit, who was seated at the front of the plane, close to the struggle, told the Amarillo Globe-News.

Laurie Dhue, a former FOX News Channel anchor who was on board, told the network passengers could hear the pilot using the words "Afghanistan" and "Israel" during the tirade.

"Our pilot went nuts and we had to land in Amarillo. I saw my life flash before my eyes today.," passenger Tiffany Lee tweeted.

Grainy YouTube footage taken by one passenger after the plane landed showed a scrum at the front of the aircraft.

In the footage an attendant reminds people to stay seated and scolds them for taking video, saying, "We don't need pictures of this, please."

edit: I guess people go insane all the time, so in a way I'm surprised stuff like this doesn't happen more often.

..this is similar to the flight attendant story..it shows the pressure and fear they can feel...that some of them don't feel safe in their workplace anymore...it's quite worrying..for them..but also that people's lives are in their hands..and the stress is affecting their behaviour in this way
..I hope they're given proper help and councelling..to do their jobs without fear

Absolutely terrifying for the passengers I would have thought, however, it is an example of the strains of some jobs but also the need for close watches to be done with Airline staff as to their psychological wellbeing.
A really worrying incident for everyone caught up in it.

I would have knocked him out cold.

I am surprised someone didn't as he was clearly really losing it bigtime.

Im guessing it could be some work related stress too, or maybe he had previously been involved in an incident and was suffering PTSD we don't know.

A US pilot who was tackled by his own passengers after he allegedly ran through a packed plane screaming about bombs and terrorists has been charged by federal prosecutors.

Clayton Osbon, 49, was charged with "interfering with a flight crew", a charge that is often levied against unruly passengers or those who fail to comply with airline staff instructions.

During his mid-air outburst Osbon ranted about religion, bombs and terrorists, and told his co-pilot he was being evaluated by someone, according to the affidavit filed with the federal criminal complaint in Amarillo, Texas.

His co-pilot became concerned when Osbon "yelled over the radio to air traffic control and instructed them to be quiet" and declared "we need to take a leap of faith".

"We're not going to Vegas," Osbon allegedly told his co-pilot, before delivering what the first officer described as "a sermon".

..Apparantly this guy could face 20 years in jail
..as terrifying as it must have been..when you think of the sentencing in this country...for paedophiles..and rapists...I really don't think he deserves that..he may have had a complete breakdown....

Edit:...I know the incident wasn't in this country..I'm just not familiar with American sentencing
