Wild animals and The Circus

Inspired by Marcs thread..............

What's your view on wild animals like Elephants and Lions being used to perform in Circuses?

Would you ever go to a circus and support this?

Personally I think it's awful to keep these animals captive and force them to do tricks for our amusement. I have brought my kids to the circus but only to ones that don't use animals, it was still very entertaining and they loved it.

I think they are banned here...I will check but I haven't seen one advertised for years.
I dont agree with it either.

I'd thought that they'd brought in a law here too but that circus in the news story Marc posted obviously have an Elephant

Don't agree with it and would never go to a circus that featured them.

I disagree with this practice, it's just not right. A Zoo/safari park, where the animals are properly cared for and can be seen in natural habitats is a far better alternative. These people just exploit the animals and it's all just about making money.

Donkeys on Blackpool Beach/any beach really is another peeve, I don't think it's nice.

I don't see much of a problem as long as they're well cared for, animals are often used for entertainment

Well cared for? Have you seen the how they train Elephants? It's horrible

I can't see why circuses can't carry on without using wild animals like that, there's no need for it.

I didn't say they were just that if they were I wouldn't have too much of a problem, is it much different to things like greyhound or horse racing? they're all just using animals for entertainment purposes

Edit - and zoos as well, they often mistreat animals

Thats illegal
No need to do that.
No one supports that.

Well, the way greyhounds and horses are treated in those sports aren't always great either but I think there's a big difference when it's a wild animal, they're completely out of their natural habitat and way of life

I will still Visit a Circus
as one day they may be gone from this side of the World.

Errors happen in everything.

Mystic Mock 29-03-2012 11:14 PM

I don't believe it should be allowed personally, but if the majority of people want to see stuff like that then let them I say.

Hmm zoos though, I think it's all a pretty similar concept where you're just using animals as entertainment

Well, I visited Dublin Zoo a few years ago and I thought some of the enclosures they had for some of the animals were disgraceful and not at all adequate, that definitely is something that I don't think is right.

It is a bit sad seeing wild animals locked up in Zoos but it's no where near on the same league as Circuses, they're still left to be Elephants and Lions in an enclosure that is similiarish to their nature habitat and especially with animals that are in danger of being wiped out in the wild, I can see the benefits of Zoos for breeding these animals and trying to keep the species going.
