Seven dead in California college shooting

Seven people died and three others were wounded in a shooting at a small California religious college Monday, Oakland police said.

An Asian male in his 40s was detained as a suspect, but he has not yet been charged in the shooting, according to police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.

"We believe that this is the person," Watson said.

Police would not release the suspect's name or confirm his relationship to his victims or Oikos University in East Oakland, she said.

Several of the victims were students, Watson said.

Gunfire erupted inside the single-story building that houses the private Christian college about 10:30 a.m. (1:30 p.m. ET), according to Lucas Garcia, who was teaching an English class when it began.

Garcia told CNN affiliate KGO-TV that he counted about six gunshots from a nearby nursing classroom when he heard someone yell, "He's got a gun."

Garcia evacuated his students from the building while the gunfire continued, he said.

The college, which caters to the Korean American Christian community, offers degrees in theology, music, nursing and Asian medicine, according to its website.

The suspect was arrested outside a Safeway convenience store in nearby Alameda, California, San Francisco Chronicle reporter Henry Lee told CNN.

Heard about this. Sad it goes on.

How many more incidents like this are needed before they tighten up their gun control laws? While I can understand the arguments against it, and of course things like this can happen even with gun control - as we saw in Toulouse recently - but the frequency of attacks like this and the number of people who are killed by guns in the US means they do really need to re-examine their firearm laws IMO

I think it's better that we don't find out, those type of killers should never have their reasons told. They seem to kill people so the world will listen to them. Apparently the recent Norwegian spree killer had loads of propaganda ready for the worlds media to lap up his story but the Norwegian authorities, rightly imo, didn't publish any of it. It's a shame we even know anything about him at all frankly

Scarlett. 03-04-2012 10:59 AM

Why does this seem so common in America? I know there has been incidents elsewhere in the world, but a lot seem to happen in America

They appear to have easy access to guns, and a culture that worships them. That has to be at least part of the reason why it happens there so often

Nothing much to add to this. I know the Americans want to cling on to their gun laws and try hard to justify them by saying it is their "right". The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the US covers the right to bear arms. It wasn't until much later that Thirteenth Amendment put an end to slavery. So when the right to bear arms was adopted into the Constitution, it was perfectly acceptable for white people to own black people... which goes to show how archaic their gun laws are.

It angers me whenever I see Americans going on about how they need to combat terrorism and foreign threats, when they turn a blind eye to such a stupidly obvious fact such as relaxed gun laws kills people, children and students, in their own country.

Interesting article addressing that question http://www.independent.co.uk/news/wo...internalSearch

Seems a big factor is ease of access to firearms

Quote:

One factor that, for many, defines America is access to guns. If kids could not bring guns to school, we wouldn't have Columbine or Virginia Tech (where 32 people were slaughtered by 23-year-old student Cho Seung-hui in 2007). Or, now, Oakland, Professor Ochberg might have added.

"The reason we have an American school shooting problem that exceeds other nations has to do with access to loaded weapons by kids who should not have that access. Any serious attempt to prevent school shooting will have to attack the problem," he said.
