Four 8+ Earthquakes Hit Indonesia, Tsunami Warnings Issued

Jakarta: Indonesia has issued a tsunami warning after a quake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.7 hit waters off westernmost Aceh province. The US Geological Survey said Wednesday the quake was centered 20 miles (33 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor around 308 miles (495 kilometers) from the provincial capital of Banda Aceh.
Said, an official at Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics Agency who goes by only one name, said a tsunami warning has been issued. India also issued tsunami warning for Nicobar Islands following massive earthquake off Sumatra coast.
Tremors were also felt in Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and several other cities on the eastern coast of India.

Indonesia straddles a series of fault lines that makes the vast island nation prone to volcanic and seismic activity.
A giant 9.1-magnitude quake off the country on December 26, 2004, triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed 230,000 people, nearly three quarter of them in Aceh.

I suppose 50cm does not sound a lot, but because of the sheer volume of water that follows it, I imagine it actually can be quite dangerous.

Tsunamis of up to 80cm hit Indonesia after quake: meteorological agency.

New #Tsunami warning after massive aftershock of 8.2 Appears no significant waves after first #earthquake but many warnings still in place.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says the areas under tsunami watch include: Indonesia, India, Australia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Maldives, Malaysia, Mauritius, Reunion, Seychelles, Oman, Pakistan, Somalia, Madagascar, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Comores, Mozambique, Kenya, Tanzania, Crozet Islands, Bangladesh, Kerguelen Islands, South Africa and Singapore.

The general view of experts appears to be that the earthquake that caused the 2004 tsunami had a magnitude of 9.2, but was also of a much stronger vertical component, whereas today's was more horizontally directed.

Not always. Sometimes the aftershock can be greater than the earthquake. In that case the aftershock becomes the earthquake and the original earthquake becomes a foreshock.

Mrluvaluva 11-04-2012 12:48 PM

Tsunami watch has been lifted for most of Indian Ocean, remains for Indonesia, India, islands.

We won't hear the end of this now.
