Sabrina the Teenage Witch is being rebooted for an upcoming movie by Sony Pictures.

The fantasy series will be made into a live action superhero origin story in a similar vein to Spider-Man, following a young girl who discovers she has supernatural powers.

Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari will write the film's screenplay, while Real Steel's Don Murphy and Susan Montford will produce, reports Deadline. Mark Waters is in line to direct.

Archie Comics' Jon Goldwater will executive produce, while screenwriter Jeff Stockwell will co-produce.

The tone of the film is said to be "edgier" than the 1990s TV series. However, Sabrina's black cat Salem will return as a transformed prince who helps with her love life.

"We mentioned it in a meeting to [Sony co-chairwoman] Amy Pascal who chimed in, 'I'm the little witch girl'," Murphy and Montford said. "From then on we knew it was the right home."

Sabrina originally came from the 1960s Archie comics, before spawning animated TV spinoffs in 1969, 1971 and 1999.

Its most famous incarnation, however, is the live action TV series starring Melissa Joan Hart that ran for seven seasons from 1996-2003.

Stop mercilessly killing my childhood Hollywood.

I wish Melissa Joan Hart was bigger than she is now. :sad:

Why don't they just create a brand new show, with a new name. Hardly worth bothering to have it in the brand of "Sabrina" as it's nothing like it.

Too busy getting married and having a few kids.

Used to like the live-action series... and agreed ukturtle, apart from this nothing else ever really happened for her.

It's worth bothering to do if they care about the interest the name will bring. I imagine a lot of people grew up watching Sabrina. Doesn't surprise me that's trying to be capitalized on.

actually in America she has done Dancing With The Stars (SCD) and she has a sitcom on basic cable called Mellisa and Joey. Where she plays a councilwoman and a legal guardian to her teenage nephew and Niece with from a Male Nanny named Joey.

No-one can top the chemistry of the original cast. Sabrina, the aunts and Salem were perfect.

I hope Melissa at least gets a cameo in this.

Strange, I just watched Sabrina last night for the first time in like five years... it was pretty fulfilling, because it was the very first episode, and I used to be a massive fan of the show and would have done anything to see the first episode back in the day. <3

I hope MJH plays an aunt or something.
