Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini has died after collapsing during Pescara-Livorno game after suffering a heart attack.

He was rushed to the local hospital, but it was confirmed that he was already dead when the ambulance arrived.

Morosini fell to the ground in the 31st minute of the match and received urgent medical attention on the pitch. A defibrillator was also used on the 25-year-old player.

'He suffered a cardiac arrest. Unfortunately he was already dead when the ambulance arrived. He never regained consciousness,' announced Doctor De Blasi.

The visitors were winning 2-0 after 31 minutes when Livorno midfielder Morosini began to stagger and then fell to the ground. Medical staff tried to revive him on the pitch and he was then rushed to the local hospital in an ambulance.

It is at first glance a similar situation to the one that saw Fabrice Muamba collapse during Tottenham-Bolton.

The chief cardiologist of the Pescara hospital was in the stands during the game and rushed down immediately to help.

'He looked at me in the eyes when he was taken into the ambulance,' Pescara's general manager, Danilo Iannascoli, told Sky Italia. 'We are living through a drama.'

Italian media reports said a car belonging to traffic police blocked the ambulance's way into the stadium and a window had to be broken so the car could be moved.

'I don't know if the ambulance was late, but I know that the entrance onto the pitch was blocked by a vehicle,' Iannascoli said. "Morosini collapsed, he tried to get back up but then collapsed again.'

Horrible watching him trying to get up but just being unable to, and seeing that one player desperately trying to get everyone's attention while they're all oblivious :(

****ing hell. That's terrible. I agree with Matt, that one player trying to shout the ref who has no idea what's going on. Heartbreaking. RIP :(

ITALIAN football was in mourning this afternoon after a player died following an on-pitch collapse.

In a terrible echo of Bolton star Fabrice Muamba’s shock hospitalisation last month, Livorno midfielder Piermario Morosini was pronounced dead after suffering a cardiac arrest during his team’s Serie B match at Pescara.

The 25-year-old collapsed in the 31st minute and received treatment on the pitch - reportedly including a heart massage in a bid to resuscitate him - before being rushed to hospital.

The match was abandoned and the players left the field in tears.

Last night there were claims a parked cop car delayed help getting to Morosini. Pescara goalie Luca Anania said: “My team-mates carried the stretcher to the ambulance.”

“We have done everything possible to save him but he never regained consciousness,” doctor Leonardo Paloscia told reporters.

Another doctor at the Pescara hospital said he was dead on arrival at hospital.

Following the tragedy, all Italian football league games have been suspended.

It's awful how that's got him on camera literally at the moment of death, quite morbid.

Mrluvaluva 15-04-2012 12:03 AM

It's truly awful to see someone struggling like that. I hope he is at rest.

R.I.P, I can't believe all these cases that's happening recently in Football, what do you think is causing this cardiac arrests?

Patrick 15-04-2012 01:50 AM

Casually playing on whilst one of your players' life is coming to an end in the middle of the pitch and they're helpless?

Bastards.

..And that'd kind of be like laughing at a funeral or something.

untraceable heart conditions, it isn't a sudden thing, they happen all the time quite alot, we just usually don't hear about them but the FM case changed that

I think we would still have heard about this one though, Livorno are a pretty big club and all the Italian league games have had to be cancelled, probably wouldn't have received as much attention though I guess
