Titanic II announced, to set sail in 2016

An Australian billionaire has unveiled plans to build a 21st century update of the doomed Titanic cruise liner.

Titanic II has been commissioned by mining magnate Clive Palmer, who has agreed a deal with Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build a new ship with the same dimensions of the original.

The luxury liner is planned to set sail for its first trip from England to New York in 2016.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said in a statement.

"Titanic II will sail in the northern hemisphere and her maiden voyage from England to North America is scheduled for late 2016."

The Titanic recently passed the 100th anniversary since its sinking on April 15, 1912.

Palmer added that he hoped the new ship would be a tribute to the 1,514 crew and passengers who lost their lives in the disaster.

"These people produced work that is still marvelled at more than 100 years later and we want that spirit to go on for another 100 years."

Titanic II will have the same dimensions of the original ship - 270m long, 53m high and weighing 40,000 tonnes.

It will also contain 840 rooms and nine decks, while design teams are working with historical research teams to complete the project. It is currently unknown how much the ship will cost to be built.

Palmer added: "Titanic II will be the ultimate in comfort and luxury with on-board gymnasiums and swimming pools, libraries, high-class restaurants and luxury cabins."

The magnate is Australia's fifth richest person, estimated to be worth around $5bn.

I actually think it will sell out quickly

Mystic Mock 30-04-2012 02:55 PM

With all the history behind the first one there will be no chance of this taking off well with the people.

exactly lol

I'd go on it :D

I think it would be magical in a way, a taste of what the world was like 100 years ago

then again it will probably be all modernized. Which I guess isn't that bad.

You could be wrong about that as a Southampton Travel Company
set up the Titanic 100 year journey deal last month
it sold out and 3 times the amount
wanted to travel on it.

The Prices were High as well.

Don't tempt fate. This sounds like bad news.

No as Hi Tech Gear can save the ship now.

Well you would think so...but it wasnt too long ago we had a 'mini' titanic situation on our hands.

Patrick 30-04-2012 03:46 PM

Think it should set sail from Ireland to New York if I'm completely honest, seeing as the original was made here.

Anyway, I bet this will be one of those plans that fall through and they don't end up completing.
Would be funny if it hit an iceberg though lol.

But a Helicopter Pad
on a massive ship changes the risk.

King Gizzard 30-04-2012 03:59 PM

He can not sit on his money
so why not set up a Deal with China to build it
and Triple his money
after that Deal and 1st trip.

Jamie. 30-04-2012 06:29 PM

I actually like the idea of a hoax iceberg, like a reutine practice evacuation for all ticket holders 1 week before the ship sets sail...

Harry! 30-04-2012 06:59 PM

As much as it is history I would not want to go on that crusie, I would be scared I would fall off the railings.
