Do you believe that your subconscious mind control your behaviour?

Most of us would vouch for ourselves: “I am in control of myself”. “My behavior is controlled.” But you will be surprised to know that most often, we have very little control on what we do. We are driven to behave the way we do, and we are seldom in control.

Unbelievable, but I think it is true. When we think before we decide or act, we do so with our conscious mind. But life is full of actions at every step and every moment, not all of which are results of our conscious decisions. There are several actions which are controlled by the subconscious mind. We are not in control of the actions governed by our subconscious mind

..this is a quote and not my own words but I personally believe it to be true..I think we are 'programmed' by past memories and experiences which dictate our reactions and feelings to certain situations

my subcsoncious mind is telling me that i'm tired and I can't take in what you just said

The full link here give more insight as to how the subconscious works.

I don't think it controls. No. Partly for the reason detailed further down in the article.

Quote:

It is said that the conscious mind is logical, analytical. Subconscious mind is illogical. And since most of our behavior is governed by the subconscious mind, you can imagine what will be the outcome
Since Prem then goes on to say we can learn - well that's (to me) the conscious mind controlling the subconscious - rather than the vice versa.

I do however think it allows us to think or consider things in different light than we would have previously, prior to having had xyz past experience.

ie: if we hadn't experienced something, we can only 'assume' what we would do/how we would act. When we actually experience whatever that 'thing' may be - we have knowledge and that allows us to factor in other responses/behaviours.

I think it's true as well. Also there's a lot of our brain that we don't know. It's fascinating stuff.

Hi Vanessa. I watched something not too long ago - that despite previous belief that we only used a fraction of our 'brain power' - recent studies indicate that we do infact use something in the region of 70/80% - and not the previously thought 10% of it's capacity.

It's all down to which school of thought I guess that people believe in.

Very true: especially if your TV signal isn't the best.

I think there's still some that we don't use. 20% is still a significant amount.

Absolutely agree: for example: I do think we have the capacity for telepathy - we simply don't know how to tap into it.

But as for the subconscious controlling us - that's not something I believe is true. I think reference to past experiences etc is more linked to 'learned behaviour' than subconscious behaviour.

Yes, i think telepathy is possible as well.

my subconscious loves cake and chocolate i am powerless to stop him.lol

I agree with that quote Ammi, I think being aware of it can help you to try and change certain behaviours or reactions to situations. I've tried to do it myself with a couple of things by recognising the fact that I didn't like the way I reacted to certain situations and trying to stop myself and train myself to walk away and take a few deep breaths before I more calmly decided how to react. It definitely works.......not every time but the more I practise the more often it does work.

But yeah I do think that alot of time peoples reactions to things are more subconscious and impulsive rather than concious but I do think if you recognise these things in yourself you can try to stop yourself and make more concious decisions.

Hope that post makes sense!

I agree... I do believe that to a certain extent we are programmed by past memories and experiences. I sometimes find myself making decisions that go against what looks like the best decision because I have a gut feeling about something.

MTVN 03-05-2012 12:02 PM

Yeah, some people argue that free will is just an illusion because of this, that our actions are pretty much inevitable based on past experiences and everything that happens is determined by what happened before. I'm not sure if it's true, I'd like think not because it's a pretty bleak view of things

joeysteele 03-05-2012 12:12 PM

Yes to a certain degree.
I can go with the quote on this one.

Kizzy 03-05-2012 12:53 PM

I think they are entirely seperate, and the subconcious mind takes over when we sleep and when we are in iminent danger (fight or flight).
It obvious we are shaped by our experiences, and our memory of them can govern how we respond to future situations and decisions.

Intuition can be the subconcious trying to influence a concious decision, you get feel for someone after the first sight or contact as your subconcious makes links positive or negatively about that person/situation, this influences how we act conciously.

How we are socialised as children shapes the subconcious mind the most imo
As for auras Could be you have sinethesia arista :)

Not control as such...but I do think it infulences your decisions at times

I don't know if I agree with that

Kizzy 03-05-2012 02:24 PM

He has a point, some sociologists say its even younger by 3.. If a child has had no human contact by then they will never be a fully functioning adult :(

Yes I really do believe in it and like Niamh I always try to take a step back and analyse why something is making me feel uncomfortable...and if I manage to.I usually find it has been triggered by a subconcious memory. It's not always possible to do it because we can't just conjure up the subconsious at will..for me it's bit like following a trial..
..I was told that our subconsious remembers everything..photographically..so all information is stored there..and it effects most of our behaviour even though we may not realise it..because we will be drawn to situations with 'happy links'..and feel uncomfortable with ones with 'sad links'......

...I don't think that was a very good way to describe it lol

..I do personally agree with the article
