Oh right. He had to wait until he was in announced as the World's Fattest Man before he had a 'wake up call' that he needed.

did the fact that he was completely incapacitated years before hand not give him a BIG HUGE clue?

No pity whatsoever. NONE.

It's got to be a psychological thing...Why would anyone do that to themselves?...

He said: 'My mum was amazing - always scrimping and saving to make ends meet. We ate what we could afford - Spam and mash, egg and chips, mincemeat stew.

'We ate fruit and veg and my relationship with food was completely normal. At school I was bullied about having big ears. I didn't fit in and I hated being there, which caused problems.'

By the time he was 13, he was skiving so much authorities threatened to take him into care.

Instead, he was sent to a private school for troubled teens in Hampshire. But then tragically, when he was 16, his mum died of double bronchial pneumonia.

'It was a total surprise. She'd been in and out of hospital with diabetes and severe asthma, but we never expected it.

'I felt so sad and guilty for the hassle I'd caused her. I started eating to ease the pain and before I knew it, I was binging every time something upset me.'

Mr Martin said he would spend an average of £30 a day on food and by the time he turned 25 'was a complete mess'.

'I was getting bigger but didn't notice until I could no longer fit into the extra large joggers and T-shirts on the high street.

What a load of BS. He didn't fit in...so what, thousands of kids don't fit in but they don't get sent off to private schools for troubled teens....that tells its own story. Sounds like a spoiled brat.

His mother had been in and out of hospital with Diabetes and severe asthmas and her death came as a surprise? they didn't expect it? Oh come on ....please. Someone who is in and out of hospital with severe asthma and diabetes clearly is a very ill person and at 16 years of age: that's old enough to realise that.

He didn't notice he was getting bigger..... what ?!! Did he suddenly go from a size M to XXXXXXL overnight then. His waist went from 34 to 6ft in the space of a few months?

Nothing quite like playing the innocent victim now with the 'I feel guilty about mum' crap.

first he felt guilty about mum...then that went from binge eating everytime anything upset him. Good god.....most people cope with things that upset them: they don't put on 30 or 40 stone and then expect everyone else to bail them out.

Pathetic.

Bit harsh Pyra, at least he accepts he's only got himself to blame

It's a serious discussion: some opinions are likely to be harsh. Some not. That's the way it rumbles.

Kizzy 06-05-2012 03:27 PM

Erm...You know what they say about bleeding heart liberals?...Well um, its true. I do sort of feel for the guy...
As kids we put our parents through soooo much and then when they are gone it can eat you up....Or in this guys case you can eat everything up....

If he accepts that - they he should accept that he got himself into this mess and therefore it is upto him to get himself out of it.

Not expected to be waited on hand and foot, getting all sorts of handouts / gastric bands etc all paid for - when he's contributed little to society - and when there are seriously ill people who look after their bodies and don't abuse them.

Sick kids with leukemia, innocents with MS, Motor Neurone disease: that's where these government monies should be diverted: not to this type of gluttoness mess.

Good on him for sorting himself out. No matter what you say it's a mental illness added to the fact the mail have probably twisted his words. Wish him all the best

yeah, it's only taken him to reach 50plus stone to sort himself out. By not cramming his face.

I don't believe it is a mental illness - and neither does he.... if that was the case, he would not be admitting he blames himself then.....would he. ;)

In fairness: I think he's not only bigger but far far heavier than several couches put toghether.!

Kizzy 06-05-2012 03:42 PM

It is a mental illness I feel he was essentially eating himself to death, I'm glad he has found the strength to want to return to a normal healthy weight. We do all we can to help anorexics and bulimics overcome their demons its only fair.
And when the band has worked he will be able to work and contribute so its a means to an end too.

Maybe he doesn't realise it's a mental illness? He could of become oblivious to what he had become. Maybe he does..he just needs an excuse to get out of this mess..that only he himself can do it

and I don't believe he's hundred percent to blame himself either, something will have made him insecure enough to just stay in and eat

Yes and of course, all the health care professionals who study for years, all the social services people he'll have come into contact with - -they didn't realise that then either?

Every professional person, every medically trained person, he's come into contact with over all these years, every single one of them missed that then eh - since way back in 2001.

'Since then I've been on incapacity benefit, because I haven't been fit or well enough to work, even though I would love to.'

Now stuck in his reinforced bed, each day he is visited by seven carers who hand wash him and change his sheets. Doctors and nurses make home visits to check on his health

Kizzy 06-05-2012 03:57 PM

I understand where pyramid is coming from, how was he allowed to exist like this?...If he cannot walk then he could have quite easily been prevented from overeating by not buying and preparing him fattening foods...Sounds like tough love and it is...However he would have been in no position to argue.
Or rather he would have no choice BUT to stay in the same position and argue...:)

and all the while....he wasn't exactly complaining about having all these carers, helpers, having his sister run after his every whim, wasn't too motivated to 'want to work' (as he claims) when he could lie in his bed every day getting everyone else do everything for him - including them having to clean up his own excrement.
