'1984' as a Big Brother Theme.

Got this idea of DrunkerThanMoses and iRyan, one of them mentioned the eye giving an 80's theme to it, and iRyan said the trailer reminds him of 1984.

Think about it..would be the best theme ever.
Right I kept saying how I would love there to be an 80's feel in the house, because of the eye. And as we all know, the 80's were amazing, so you could have loads of neon around the house, 80's pop culture references, cocaine on the shopping list, and famous 80's music being played in as an alarm every morning.

Now to 1984 - obviously what Big Brother is based on, I remember BB7 went for that approach aswell - just briefly in the titles, with 1984 references, the whole emphasis on the eye watching and stuff like that, and we had a short task in BB6 that mirrored 1984. But I always said how I'd love a BB Series that was actually based on that novel, I mean the early series were of course, but no way would we ever get anything like that now.
Infact I bet the producers don't even know the actual origin of the idea of 'Big Brother' anyway.

Imagine if they had a play on that in the house, for example have the house all 80's Themed, the public and housemates would expect it to be a Summer full of 80's stuff, constant fun etc but have twists and tasks based on 1984, maybe make it abit sinister.
Have four big numbers on the garden wall or something, stating '1984' and posters scattered around the house saying 'Big Brother is Watching YOU.'

It would just be irony in a sense, George Orwell wrote that novel in the 40's, with the assumption that the 80's would be like a cold time where goverments where watching you, controling your every move, the destruction of society etc - funny thing is, 2012 is getting more like that every day.

So yeah, base the series on '1984' but go at it from two different perspectives:

1. How the 80's actually were
2. How George Orwell foretold it

It's an interesting little twist, if you think about it. Would make for a fantastic house design, great tasks and twists, and just a decieving theme of the public and housemates expecting Big Brother to be fun - when he'd be more controlling, evil and manipulating as ever.

Rick Astley can be pumped in on repeat whenever they break rules :)

OMG Yes.

Patrick that sound amazing! Would be bloody brilliant!

I really think BB should be tough and when they tell the housemates on launch that the doors are locked and will stay locked until the 1st eviction then say.

"Big Brother will be keeping a close eye on all of you so abide by our rules or you will be severly punished"

Agree! I remember they use to be like all drinking and laughing after launch.
And then Big Brother would come in, in a deep voice and be like;

'This.. Is Big Brother, Housemates - the front door is now locked. And will remain locked, until the first eviction.'

It just sounded so deep the way it use to be said. There was nothing better than the launch finishing, and flicking over to E4, pressing the red button and hearing that.

Like the BBAU Big Brother. They have absolutely no emotion.

As a literature student may I just facepalm on behalf of all others when a great literary work is used as inspiration for a reality TV show

Sawyer 09-05-2012 06:22 PM

Yess, and they could have a constant emphasis on the room 101 thing which could be central the the weekly shopping task.

Eurythmics would have to be featured somewhere for the 80's/1984 theme.

One thing I hate about BBAU is how annoying BB is. The housemates are not even aloud to get drunk and BB make stupid pointless rules.

WAT!? I do know that the AUS housemates weren't allowed to call Big Brother, 'mate' though...

Kizzy 09-05-2012 07:15 PM

Little bit of trivia for you the police and criminal evidence Act and the data protection Act both came in in ....1984. Spooky eh?

Yer there was one episode I was watching and a girl got drunk, big brother seized all the alcohol and the drunk housemate was put in solitary confinement.

thesheriff443 09-05-2012 08:07 PM

in the australian one, the one where the couple that went in together the girl told big brother if she managed not be evicted before her friends wedding she would leave, she did stay and bigbrother had to come up witha twist so she could leave to go to her friends wedding.

At the end oef the launch, BB should say, "We remind house mates that if anybody complains or wants to leave, £5,000 will be taken off the prize fund".

They need to have authority!

I actually did an essay today and one of my essays was based on "carnivalization" I used Big Brother, 1984 and the fact that BB is in charge in a alternative reality; we watch them, comparing the cameras to the CCTV cameras watching us in the outside world.

I really hope they go back to BB5 type. BB has no emotion and was very strict.

Patrick 10-05-2012 03:29 PM

BB5's Big Brother voice was amazing.

They always used the cold, dark voice it was brilliant.

Marc 10-05-2012 03:34 PM

I've never read it :)

Mystic Mock 10-05-2012 03:34 PM

I like your idea Patrick but they're just obsessed with the Housemates hooking up with each other.
