If London was destroyed, which city would become capital of England?

Birmingham or Manchester? Also I say England became it's likely the United Kingdom would collapse with London gone.

I was told in year 7/8 that Leeds would become the capital D:

Niall 23-05-2012 09:42 PM

Probably Manchester. Thats the second largest, right?

But yeah England along with the entire country would be screwed without London. We'd lose a massive economic, cultural, and tourist hub.

King Gizzard 23-05-2012 09:42 PM

Norwich of course

King Gizzard 23-05-2012 09:43 PM

(birmingham, central)

If the UK did hypothetically survive, I reckon the UK captial would become Edinburgh due to it being the biggest parliment outside London, so it would be easier to switch operations there. I reckon England's capital would become Manchester, Birmingham may be more central, but Manchester is probably the most important city in England next to London.

Redway 23-05-2012 09:49 PM

Birmingham.

joeysteele 23-05-2012 10:30 PM

Birmingham, beyond a doubt.

Jesus. 23-05-2012 10:37 PM

Birmingham is the 2nd city, so it would become the capital.

arista 23-05-2012 10:40 PM

Manchester

It is as you point out the official 2nd City so it for sure would in all seriousness be the only probable new Capital if London was gone for good.

Manchester tops second city poll

Manchester is thought to be England's second most important city ahead of Birmingham, a BBC survey has found.

The poll revealed 48% of people thought Manchester was second behind London, compared to 40% choosing Birmingham.

This is despite Manchester being far smaller than the Midlands city and reveals people consider other aspects when they think of the "second city".

Factors such as Manchester's recent sporting success and influential music scene may play a part, it is thought.

Architect Ian Simpson, who has helped shape the skyline of both cities, said: "What I think Manchester has at the moment, is that it just has a cool edge. I think most people know it's a bit cool to be here, to work here, and to be part of this."

The survey of 1,000 people, commissioned by BBC Inside Out, also showed that in the 16-24 age group 58% said they believed Manchester to be more important and 38% said Birmingham was.

The only age group where Birmingham came out top was in the 65 and over range where 48% considered Birmingham more important compared to 42% for Manchester.
So, Brum's the Second City for pensioners while Manchester's No 2 for TnT's .....

Actually think Stoke-on-Trent would be a serious contender
