Would you ever take the rap for a crime they commited with a punishment of between 1-3 years?

No way. If they got themselves into the crime, they can face the consequences.

No, they commit the crime they do the time, or whatever form the punishment takes. If you've brought your child up right however the situation shouldn't arise, so on that level, as a parent I would consider myself partly to blame. I've raised my son to be an ethical decent person, but nobody is perfect definitely not me, I don't know anyone who is whiter than white in regards to the law.

There's always the potential for anyone to go off the rails.

I personally, between you lot, me and the garden gate, have never paid my tv licence, not a good example at all, I know, but I resent it, its very grasping to charge it at all when they could just fund themselves by adverts like other channels do.

Oh, get me started on the TV Licence and I will go on for ages about it, I hate the accursed thing and I don't have to pay for one yet myself but I will begrudge every single penny of it when I do.
I would scrap that dinosaur tax on everyone elgigible to pay it tomorrow.
The political party that has the courage to say it will abolish this near and intimidating robbery from people would get masses of votes rushing in for them.

As to the topic, if I have Children when I am older and they committed a crime, I doubt,( unless it was a really serious one involving violence or a sexual crime), that I would turn them in myself but I would encourage them to do so themselves.
I wouldn't take the blame for them though on crimes,I believe we have to face our own mistakes and wrongdoings,however, I would always be there as a strong support,standing by any Children I may have in that scenario.

Aged 17-19... probably not, because they're old enough at that stage to realise what's right and wrong and should take the punishment themselves if they do something bad, I can't protect them forever!

That being said, when we're young we all make mistakes, so if my 13/14ish year old got in trouble I wouldn't hand myself in to protect them but i'd probably try to hide them away and attempt to prevent them from getting caught.

I actually asked my parents this the other day and they said if me or my sister ever got in trouble they'd take the blame themselves no matter how big the punishment would be, which surprised me. I don't think I could do that myself. Luckily for them I can't imagine that situation would ever arise. :p

Besides, as mentioned in the OP, this 'child' you're mentioning is between 17 and 19 years old. That's well past the age of responsibility. I wouldn't turn myself in for any of my children, no matter what age (when/if I have children), but certainly not for someone who's 13 and/or above. At that age they obviously know what they're doing fully well so no excuses, I don't think, should be made on their behalf.

I wouldn't do what you've suggested doing for a 13 or 14-year-old. Anyone who's a teenager, I reckon, knows what's right and wrong and has a choice to either do what's right, do what's wrong or somewhere in the middle. If they did something wrong, they should be able to face the consequences of what they did.

Whether you agree with the TV Licence fee or not: it's not the best of examples to be giving to a child: if you don't agree with something: go against the grain and all that.

Said 17 to 19 year old might think it's fine to go driving having had a few pints: they might disagree that an odd pint doesn't affect their driving ability: to they decide they aren't going to listen to what others think.

Any parent who does hide a child from a crime they committed - isn't being a good parent in my opinion.

I dont think I could, like people have said Id fully be there as a support but it would teach them responsibility so itd be something theyd need to do. The only scenario where I might is if they have a baby.
