Keeping Cool In This Glorious Sunshine & Heat

How do you keep cool in during gorgeous hot weather like we are having just now?

Me.... well my natural coolness helps, obviously. LOL :laugh2:

Seriously: this weekend has been spent in bikinis, and/or sarong - relaxing in the back garden, lazing and sizzling away, recharging the batteries - with the gentle clicking and spray of the garden sprinkler in the background, listening to the birds cheeping and the cat mieowing coz it's not fun with a fur coat. :D

Lots of tea to induce sweating: with an occasional freezing cold drink for the sheer bliss of it.

When I'm needing a cool down: I let the sprinkler do it for me.

House is kept cool with all windows and doors open - letting the gentle cross breezes waft through. Sleep is easy due to the fab invention of mobile aircon unit.

Life in this weather is simply great. :D

How do you keep your body temp down?

Packs binoculars and heads to pyramids house.

I'm using fans but still can't sleep well.

During the day I just sit in the shade as much as possible or if i'm inside I have the fans on and windows open.

Normally i'm a tea addict but in this weather I mostly stick to water.

A polo shirt, jeans and either vans or converses. I have a snapback and a beanie (hats) sitting lonely in my wardrobe, but my head's already more than hot enough. It's a real privilege having the sun out for any significant period of time, though. The clubs were superb last night and luckily I'm not too hungover from last night's partying. It's because I don't usually drink when the sun's still shining and it was there up until about 22:00, so before then I was just having sips of vodka. Although anything but spirits will do me. One whiff of those and I'm on the floor. Luckily there was some speed one of my mates brought down to the club so I didn't have to drink all that much.

I don't need to lose weight.... mind you, I could be doing with getting back to some muscle toning. *puts in diary*

A little bit of anything non-corrosive never hurt anyone...

Me neither. If I lose any weight I'll be as thin as a twig. Going down the gym to maintain a six pack and build some more muscles is better for me.

Tell that to people who have all sorts of drug problems.

Wee bit of speed, then a wee bit of coke: drop a few E's, down a few tabs etc...

Getting out of your tits on drugs - is no way to keep cool in hot weather.

Anyway: this isn;t about drugs - it's to discuss the various ways that people cope with hot weather.

Air con in the car is a blessing too !

Drink plenty of tea, hot drinks quench your thirst and cool you down in heat!

Tom4784 27-05-2012 03:29 PM

Emigrate to a supermarket freezer for a few months.

You need to learn how the body works and how hot drinks have the effect of cooling.

It's very basic really.

Why on earth do you think nationals in hot countries drink hot drinks such as black tea - coffee etc.

It causes the body to perspire; ie: causes moisture on the outside of the skin.

that moisture contains heat from the body... as it evaporates in the air - so too does some of that excess body heat.

Like I say: pretty basic stuff.

:D

Actually it seems I'm not so stupid after all http://coffeetea.about.com/cs/whimsy/a/teamyth.htm

It's a tale we've all heard, usually in the form of a helpful suggestion from a friend. Whenever you mention that you're hot, someone will point out that (believe it or not!) you can cool off by drinking hot tea. The logic behind this claim, is that the hot tea makes you sweat and that helps cool you off. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it? Funny how no one ever suggests that turning up the heat in your house would actually make you cooler, since that makes you sweat too.
But many people can't help think that it still makes sense in some way. Well, I'm going to explain to everyone why it doesn't work. Since I am not a physicist in any sense, the scientific details have been simplified. In a nutshell:

The problem in the logic lies with the laws of thermodynamics. The amount of heat lost by sweating and evaporation will never exceed the amount of heat gained by the hot drink you've consumed. Another problem is that the extra heat makes your blood vessels near the skin dilate to help cool your blood faster. The nerves in your skin can sense this, causing you to feel flushed and warm. Not exactly the result you are looking for.

The overall answer, is that hot tea will make you sweat more, and increase your cooling. But the amount of extra cooling won't be enough to offset the heating-up from the tea.

So next time someone points out that you should drink hot tea in the summer, don't rush to put the kettle on. Grab a tall glass of iced tea, an iced coffee
