You are live on Channel 5, please do not swear

So I've been watching BB for several years now and there is something that I am very confused about. I'm American, if my name didn't give it away.

Why can they show taped swearing on the main show, but if someone does it live, they have to apologize? Were there really people that listened to Ashleigh's VT where she dropped 50 F-bombs in 20 seconds and were fine with that, but then were offended when she said the same word twice a few seconds later on live TV?

I know there are different rules for when you can and can't swear, so like when they had BBLB in the afternoons (mornings?) you couldn't swear at all, but on BBBM/BotS they can swear all they want and it is live. So what gives? Is there a special time in the middle where you can have swearing, but only if it is pre-recorded? This has never made a lick of sense to me.

I think it was a catchphrase that just stuck.

If it's after 9pm you can swear on Live TV. Evictions are pre-recorded, 15-20 minutes in advance of their showing on Channel 5 which may give a reason..

Well I just borrowed the catchphrase for the thread title, but that doesn't answer my question. Brian apologized for swearing on live TV when they had literally just finished showing a video of her saying the same word dozens of times. It seems to me if he is being forced to apologize for one, he should be apologizing for the other, no?

That Essex bird swore and Brian told her to stop it - that was about 10'O Clock. Past the watershed, by about an hour. It was fine for her to swear.

Just arselicking Ofcom.

It was really rude tbh

Live shows used to be on earlier when they couldn't bleep out swearing so they had to say it. It was a big catchphrase that stuck and synonymous with the show now.

It's all pre-recorded and doesn't really matter anymore. Don't think I've ever heard Brian say it.

Yeah, to be fair that's a good point. When he apologised for it (and when any presenter apologises for swearing post-9pm) I was like 'wtf?' and it irritates me, if you're going to have a watershed then let all the censorship obsessed morons have it, but after 9pm anything goes is my motto.

It also winds me up when they censor '*****' in highlights shows at 10pm, and when Emma apologised for Pete Burns saying it at about 11:55pm.

Never really thought about that before.

They allow more swearing than on American shows thank goodness. They even blur out someone's face if they swear on American programs sometimes.

Tregard 06-06-2012 07:55 PM

The show is rebroadcasted the following morning, means less stuff they have to censor. It's easier to censor the pre-recorded material than when Brian is talking to the house.

Oh I'm not condoning it - and I despise her for it, She just made a tit of herself. But there was no need for Brian to be acting like it was illegal.

Yeah, I know we're less uptight than the American's but I have always wondered, is there anywhere in the world with very little, or my idea of heaven - no censorship?

Patrick 06-06-2012 08:01 PM

Censoring is a mess in the media if I'm honest, it's always double standards aswell.

The way it's perfectly fine to show a Man's cock in full blown view - but if a girl has her clit hanging out, they need to censor that right away.. It's pathetic.
