David Nalbandian investigated by police after line judge injury

Quote:

Police are investigating a complaint of alleged assault against David Nalbandian, who was disqualified from the Aegon Championships final after a line judge was injured.

The Argentine, 30, was leading Marin Cilic 7-6 (7-3) 3-4 at Queen's when he kicked a panel in front of Andrew McDougall's seat.

McDougall's leg was cut and umpire Fergus Murphy awarded the match to Cilic despite boos from the crowd.

Nalbandian apologised for the incident.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "We are aware of an incident at the Aegon Championships on June 17.

"A complaint has been made and the Metropolitan Police Service is now investigating. The allegation is of assault."

The incident happened after Nalbandian missed a lunging forehand in the second set.

He kicked an advertising hoarding, which flew off its hinges and struck McDougall in the shin, causing a large gash.

McDougall received immediate treatment from St John's Ambulance and saw the tournament medical team.

Nalbandian told the 6,000-capacity crowd: "I am very sorry, sometimes you get frustrated on court."

He was deemed guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct and his £36,500 prize money was withdrawn and he could be hit with a further fine.
Bang 'im up, bang the Argie up ..... :hmph:

Rules are rules - the assault on the adverting board was intentional not accidental, the line judge was clearly visible, inches behind it, and the injury was both bloody and painful - it could have been worse if, say, the judge had gone into shock and died - I hope the Argie gets a massive fine and a stretch at HMP ..... :pipe:

MTVN 18-06-2012 01:01 PM

He just got a bit pissed off and directed a kick at an advertising board, it accidentally gave the judge a bit of a cut but as if there was any real possibility of serious injury, never mind death from it. He was disqualified from the final of a tournament he was looking likely to win and missed out on nearly £40k in prize money, that's punishment enough

Hasn't done anything wrong.

I disagree.

If he's a professional, he should act like one, not like a petulant schoolboy.

To paraphrase Candide:

"Dans ce pays-ci, il est bon d'emprisonner de temps en temps un joueur de tennis pour encourager les autres."

the advertising board was like 2 inches from the judge, how could he not know that it would hit the guy?

MTVN 18-06-2012 01:42 PM

Well it's more of a box, he probably thought it was a lot more sturdy

I can't believe they give excuses out to the scum of the earth, yet treat cases like this seriously, wtf is wrong with the law? it was a god damn accident unlike some of the other cases I could point out where they got away scott free.

King Gizzard 18-06-2012 04:44 PM

Absolutely pathetic the reaction to this, Sue Barker used the word brutal to describe it yesterday

I believe that you are grossly mistaken. The video clearly shows deliberation and intent from the Argie - he was reckless as to the outcome of his assault on the board.

Yes Argie Reckless

Bang On Right

MTVN 18-06-2012 05:42 PM

I think disqualifying him was even a bit harsh, and unfair on all the people who'd paid to watch it, should have just given him a massive fine

Redway 18-06-2012 06:33 PM

I just love the way the women who find amusement in murdering their children are left to roam free whilst such trivial matters as this are taken so seriously. Absolute disgrace.

Livia 18-06-2012 06:45 PM

This is tennis we're talking about. The line judge was sitting inches away but the professional sportsman couldn't control himself and lashed out like a petulant child. The assault thing is a bit far fetched because there was no intent, but it was right he was disqualified, or at what point of unprofessional behaviour do you draw the line?

This, and don't forget the 3 Muslim girls that beat the white girl up calling her a white slag, and the woman in Southend yesterday having 4 people beat her up yet I bet they won't even be taken as seriously as this.

Im not saying he shouldn't be disqualified, but seriously why has it got to be investigated? there's been fights in loads of Football matches yet they've never been investigated.

Marc 18-06-2012 09:06 PM

I think it's just.

Exactly. As I say, dickheads exist in every shape, size or form and if they called her a 'white slag' there's no justification whatsoever on the race issue. Just a month or two back we had that Essex woman hurling vile abuse at people she deemed to be 'foreigners' (which was utter nonsense). She gets banged up for five months yet the Muslim racists have nothing happen, bar a caution. Talk about equality.

He certainly did act like a petulant child, as you put it, and he most certainly deserved to be disqualified but the whole 'assualt' thing is bollocks.
