ITV reveals long-awaited plans for pay version of ITV Player

"He added that there will not be a subscription service, adding at least not at launch, and that users will be able to access 1,000 hours of archive TV and film content.
No detail was given on pricing, but ITV has opted for a rental service of "box sets" of shows as well as individual programmes. Rental content will not carry ad breaks."

Prices still to come
And will it have No Ads

Tom4784 27-07-2012 11:57 AM

It'll fail miserably, the reason why catch up services are so popular is because they are free and in this time of set top boxes and TiVo it makes no sense to charge for the service since there's a plethora of ways to get the same content for free.

They could be attempting to take on Netflix and Lovefilm I suppose but I doubt their backlog of content is as varied as the video services.

It's a foolish idea with no possible plus sides to it. It'll go the way of ITV Digital.

But they are Testing it first.

No ads will be good
worth paying for.

Tom4784 27-07-2012 12:11 PM

Why pay just for that though when most households these days have some form of Sky+ or TiVo anyway? Most people can fast forward through breaks without having to pay anything more then they already do.

A pay model for a catch up service is an obsolete concept. If you miss something you want to watch then there's already +1 as well as late night repeats and ITV's sister channels.

There's little reason to buy it.

Prices we do not know
And Exclusive deals still to come.

It could be for non Sky or Virgin customers , for example.

"On Thursday Crozier said that ITV has just completed a successful trial of the ITV Pay Player in 5,000 homes and expects to launch the service in the autumn."

Its been tested by 5000 homes
against Dezzy.
