David Bowie, Kate Bush, Rolling Stones & Sex Pistols turned down Olympics

David Bowie, Sex Pistols, The Rolling Stones and Kate Bush all turned down the chance to appear in yesterday's Olympic Games closing ceremony, according to reports.

According to The Guardian, all of the above artists were approached, but declined the invite to take part from the ceremony's producer Kim Gavin.

The piece also states that The Who – who did appear last night (August 12) – turned down Gavin twice before finally agreeing to play the event in Stratford, East London.

The three hour show – which featured The Spice Girls, Elbow, Kaiser Chiefs, Liam Gallagher, Jessie J, Queen, Annie Lennox, George Michael and Take That – received mixed reviews. The Guardian also reports that some of The Spice Girls were reluctant to appear.

Yesterday, Carl Barat revealed that The Libertines turned down the chance to perform at the Olympics closing ceremony too. The singer took to Twitter as the ceremony was taking place to say that he and his former bandmates had been asked to play, but "couldn't do it".

Kate Bush couldn't be convinced to appear, but praised the organisers of the closing ceremony, after a remix of 'Running Up That Hill' was used in the London 2012 finale.
:(

More fool them to be honest.

Shaun 14-08-2012 11:36 AM

yeah they could've seen One Direction on a lorry :(

Kazanne 14-08-2012 11:40 AM

maybe it's beneath them:conf2:

Marc 14-08-2012 11:40 AM

They should have, I mean the Olympics will never be back here in their lifetime or their fan's lifetime so it would have been special to give to their fans :(

Jack_ 14-08-2012 11:40 AM

:joker:

No, I just mean biggest opportunity ever surely? Why would you turn that down? I'd perform and I can't even sing.

Shaun 14-08-2012 11:43 AM

I can understand Bowie and Kate since they've been retired from performing for about 10 years, if not more... but the Stones are always about :suspect:

Kizzy 14-08-2012 11:48 AM

Maybe they didn't want to perform for dave and boris?...
Wonder if morrissey was asked?
Bet his reply would have ended in 'off' too :)

Mrluvaluva 14-08-2012 11:54 AM

I know The Manic Street Preachers had to turn down the chance to appear at the closing ceremony also, but that was due to prior commitments. Maybe the aforementioned artists had other engagements too?

Marc 14-08-2012 11:56 AM

Coming back for just one performance would have been lovely though.

Bastards :bored:

It's disappointing. They shouldn't have based it around British music if they couldn't get that many icons to appear or any decent acts to pay tribute to them (seriously Russel Brand singing 'I am The Walrus?' **** off.)

Aside from a few moments of brilliance the closing ceremony was a trainwreck.

Shaun 14-08-2012 11:58 AM

I know Morrissey spoke about the Olympics being all corporate and evil at some gig so I think he was never gonna happen

Totally agree. I did wonder why the stones, adele and coldplay didn't feature AT ALL. But maybe they knew what was coming...a complete bloody shambles. Still at least macca:sleep: wasn't there again....

Shaun 14-08-2012 12:02 PM

yeah Coldplay was a surprising no-show... they do just about every gig going usually :/

Marc 14-08-2012 12:03 PM

Coldplay, yes they should have played.

Morissey can go die tbh

Tom4784 14-08-2012 12:09 PM

I forgot about Coldplay and Adele, yeah their absences were peculiar.

Marc 14-08-2012 12:12 PM

Adele should have given birth to Emeli Sande on stage tbh

Shaun 14-08-2012 12:14 PM

Lily Allen doing LDN would've been amazing

arista 14-08-2012 12:20 PM

I can fully understand
David Bowie not doing it.

He is doing less work now
and I respect him

Pimps and slappers and grannies being mugged. Brilliant message to sing to the masses

Mrluvaluva 14-08-2012 12:28 PM

Could you imagine if David Bowie had been persuaded out of retirement and he performed Heroes...

Niall 14-08-2012 12:28 PM

If Goldfrapp turned up and performed Happiness it would've been the best thing ever idec
