Right-to-die campaigner Tony Nicklinson has died

Quote:

Tony Nicklinson, the “locked-in” syndrome sufferer who challenged Britain’s laws on the right to die has passed away, his lawyers said.

Tony Nicklinson's death comes just days after he lost his High Court battle for an assisted suicide warning that he had been condemned to a life he said was worse than death.

In a short statement, his solicitors at the law firm Bindmans, said only that he had passed away at 10am this morning.

It was known that his health had deteriorated in recent weeks but the cause of his death has not been confirmed independently.

Further details will be released at a London press conference shortly.

Sad news but at least his family can be at peace now

First time that death has been good news, poor guy, glad that he is free from the misery he was stuck in for so long now.

MeMyselfAndI 22-08-2012 01:31 PM

RIP, I was hoping he'd recover

Raph 22-08-2012 01:41 PM

RIP, I remember watching that documentary back in June. Sad stuff, really sad but i'm glad he can leave his misery now.

Shaun 22-08-2012 03:55 PM

So sad that he had to wait for nature to take its course :( R.I.P.

Billy 22-08-2012 04:02 PM

At least he's in peace, just a shame he didn't get to do it on his terms.

Extremely sad, however also a relief for want of a better word that he has his wish at last.
Such a cruel blow was dealt to him when he took that that stroke. R.I.P.

He'd been refusing food since last week apparently which must have sped the process up, horrible way to have spent your last few years but at least he's got what he wanted now

Andrew. 22-08-2012 04:22 PM

RIP :(

Harry! 22-08-2012 04:54 PM

This is very sad news, but he finally got his wish. And he is at peace.

I still hope his case does allow a law change in assisted suicide. People who are unable to do so SHOULD have the right to end their life.

Mrluvaluva 22-08-2012 05:32 PM

I hope he is at peace at last.

Redway 22-08-2012 05:52 PM

RIP, Tony.

At least now he's out of his pain. May his soul rest in peace.

Shaun 22-08-2012 06:14 PM

He didn't get what he wanted, really :/ I don't see this as a victory at all, and the world still needs a massive shake-up on the right to determine your own life.

I agree with this bit. We should adapt Holland's approach to the government really. There's political correctness and there's being a total nut, which is what we have in this country as of present :(.

This.

It's sad that he couldn't do it the way he wanted to on his own terms.

lostalex 23-08-2012 02:34 AM

It's horrible that he had to starve himself to death, which is a very painful way to die, instead of being allowed to have a comfortable death with the help of doctors.

I'm glad his suffering is finally over though. He was a truly brave soul.
