Leaving to University

Well as some of you know, I'm starting up University in 2 days so I'm leaving my house today. I'm going to university in the US, don't ask (:p) to New York and basically I have a lot on my mind and I thought maybe you TiBB folk could give me some advice. See, all my close friends are going to uni in either the UK or Sweden so they're going to be so far away from me. I had to say good-bye to my bros two nights ago and it was the saddest thing. It's so weird to think that i'll never be going to High School with them again. Not to mention the fact that i'm terrified of going to America. Like, my school is really good and all so I should be excited, but i'm going to feel so different in the US :/ I'm doing my JYA abroad in Wales so i'll be going to the UK again but until then, like it's stressing me out. I'm going to miss my family so much as well.

I was wondering if people could maybe tell me their stories of leaving to college, or people who are also going through it now, even though the UK starts up a little later in September.

I don't want to leave :bawling: Plus I'll be in a different time zone from most of you and I won't have sky tv

Wow, that's so cool. I've always dreamed of going to America for Uni, i'm just starting college so I don't have a clue but do wish you the best of luck with everything! :)

Raph 23-08-2012 08:03 AM

Yeah I always dreamed of going to the US too, but now that i've made that dream a reality, i'm so scared of going. It's going to be so different :/

reece(: 23-08-2012 08:08 AM

It'll be a massive change but you'll further your career and probably have a blast over there but I can imagine how scary it would be yeah, jetting off to another country without anyone there would be horrendous for me. D:

lostalex 23-08-2012 08:10 AM

Awww, don't be nervous!! Welcome to the US, i'm sure you'll have a great time.

You'll see we arn't the gun-toting bible-bashing lunatics you're expecting lol (well some of us are, but we try to banish them to trailer parks in alabama)

It's always a huge transition after high school, even more so when you are studying over seas, i'm sure it's gonna be great though. Just remember that you're there for the studies 1st and foremost, and everything else is secondary.

You might get a horrible roommate, or a horrible professor, but just stick with it, take it as it comes, and i'm sure it's all gonna work out.

I wish you nothing but the best!

Raph 23-08-2012 08:13 AM

Aw thanks lostalex, those were wise words and I'll definitely keep them in mind :)

Kizzy 23-08-2012 08:21 AM

How amazing! Good luck raph, i'm sure the year will pass quickly and you will be back with your family and friends soon wishing you didn't have to leave the friends you made there :) It will be a wonderful experience ...enjoy it! :D

Raph 23-08-2012 08:33 AM

Thanks Kizzy! Yeah I suppose I will, it's just change which is so so scary for me :p I'm leaving my house in like 3 minutes.

Staying on TiBB till the end :worship: haha!

Getting on the plane now, so sad to be leaving :(

MTVN 23-08-2012 10:34 AM

I think it's pretty normal to feel like that, especially when you're going all the way as America, I felt the same and was sh*tting it before going and I was only moving a few hours away lol, but it'll probably be fine once you get started and get into it and it's pretty cool to have the chance to study over there. Are you gonna have to stay over there for the holidays or will you be able to go home for a bit during summer and stuff?

Black Dagger 23-08-2012 10:35 AM

Will you send me some Cap'n Crunch over? I always wanted to try it. :amazed:

Have a lovely time

Umm first term I went back a couple of times for the weekend but only did it once in the second because it wasn't that convenient paying for a 5 hour train journey each way just for a weekend, and then I'd go back for Winter & Easter holidays as well so it wasn't that bad. Makes home seem a lot better after being away for weeks, finally being able to have a decent meal

I've met some my best friends at university.

As hard as it is to accept, friends come and go. But you will make loads of new friends and you will love them just as much. Don't let the sadness overcome you, you can make new friends and it'll be great, everybody is in the same boat when they start university and will be leaving their friends as well. You'll be fine buddy.

Enjoy it! They'll probably love your welsh accent too

Livia 24-08-2012 02:01 PM

Raph, I cried for ages when I first got to uni, and I was only about thirty miles from home. I ended up having the time of my life and if I could go back and do it all again tomorrow, I would. I lived and worked in New York for a while too and loved it, and I think you're going to love it as well. Of course you may be homesick at first, but there's always Skype and the phone and you can be home in about eight hours door to door!

Be homesick for a while if you have to, then have the most amazing time and treasure every minute x

AnnieK 24-08-2012 04:45 PM

I went to live and work in the us too when i was 20. was gutted to leave and spent the last week crying... My folks and best friend saw me off at the airport and it was the first time I saw my mum cry ( tears of joy I thnk). Was so sad to g but then on the plane excitement kicked in. Homesick for few weeks but then met some fab people.....then moved from Connecticut to south Carolina and had to start again....but all in all one of THE best experiences of my life....get over the irst few weeks and you will love every minute....enjoy

CharlieO 24-08-2012 05:50 PM

It will be fine trust me. For the first week it'll feel **** but the feeling will pass and you'll love it. You will love having somewhere to yourself.
