Favourite proverbs?

Do you have any favourite proverbs that you like to say, or find interesting/amusing?

I like "treat others as you would be done by". It's a great motto to try and live by, and to aspire to. :)

Another I like is "every cloud has a silver lining", nice optimistic one that.

Then there are daft ones ..... Like "while the cats away, the mice will play." Truth is the bloody cat returns eventually and the poor mice end up living in fear once more. Tis a cruel world.

My absolute favourite, and one that is so so true, is "what goes around comes around." I believe in this wholeheartedly, Karma exists and what you put out there, be it good or bad, will always come back to you in the end. My nan used to say this a lot, she was a quiet woman, but very wise. :)

What proverbs do you like?

I love ones involving Karma and stuff

What goes around comes around is a very true saying, even if it doesn't happen straight away something will happen to the person in the end.

I don't get why people see like sayings as "An eye for eye, a tooth for a tooth" as negative, could interpret it as looking out for one another

"Scott if you send me one more PM I swear to God I'm getting the mace out" has been incredibly useful on here.

Just had a look at a similar thread I made in July and got this one.

"Man who waits for roast duck to fly into mouth must wait very, very long time."

Chinese proverb that. Brilliant one... although now I feel like roast duck.

 I had to double check it was actually Josy posted this, for some reason I expected it to be Scott.

God, my mum is the proverb queen! She has one for every situation..

I cant think of many of them just now mind you apart from.. "To err is human, to forgive is divine" and "if you fly with the crows, you get shot with them" (always her way of warning me not to get in with a bad crowd!:D

Anotherof my mums is "a mickle maks a muckle" which means if you save or I suppose do a little bit at a time, it all mounts up. I take it that's a Scottish one though?

Tell me, it's ok.. I won't go in demanding free drinks because I'm a really good friend of Eoin's... promise :D

Don't go out in the dark with a black umbrella.
Never bite a badger on the arse.
Don't lick yellow snow.
Strangers are just people you haven't met yet.
